The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating an apparent hit-and-run accident Sunday evening involving multiple vehicles  — including one that later caught on fire — in the west end of St. John’s.

Sources at the scene of the accident said a silver Chevrolet Cobalt turning left from Columbus Drive onto Blackmarsh Road came in contact with two other vehicles — a red Dodge Ram truck and a red Hyundai Accent. It then fled from the scene.

However, the car did not appear to travel very far. Witnesses on James Lane, a street less than a kilometre away from the Columbus-Blackmarsh intersection, said the vehicle came to a stop on the street, with three males and a female exiting the vehicle before leaving the area on foot.

The car subsequently caught on fire. An official with the St. John’s Regional Fire Department said they were on the scene to control the blaze shortly after 8 p.m. Smoke could still be seen rising from the vehicle 10 minutes after the fire department had arrived, with firefighters periodically dousing it with water.

Officers on James Lane would not confirm whether they were still looking for the people who fled the car, although two individuals were observed sitting in the back seat of one police cruiser across from the Chevrolet Cobalt.

It is not known whether anyone was injured in the accident, though an Eastern Health ambulance arrived at the corner of Blackmarsh Road and Columbus Drive.
