NDP fisheries critic Christopher Mitchelmore says he is concerned the people of the province will be left on the hook for any clean-up needed of the closed Marystown fish plant facility.

In a news release, the MHA for The Straits – White Bay North said Ocean Choice International (OCI) has made it clear it will not be processing any more fish there, and will sell the facility.

Mitchelmore says he fears the company will gut the facility of valuable equipment and then try to walk away from the site. He says the provincial government must ensure the people it will hold OCI accountable for all the company’s responsibilities regarding the facility.

“The people of Englee, in my district, know all too well what happens when the owner of a fish plant isn’t held to its responsibilities for the site after the enterprise closes,” Mitchelmore said. “They know government will do nothing to help them.

“I’d hate to see the people of Marystown, and the people of this province, stuck with another expensive, and possibly dangerous environmental clean-up like the former paper mill in Grand Falls-Windsor and, of course, the disintegrating plant in Englee that is causing so much hardship and worry.”

Why doesn't the Government of Newfoundland do what it always does when it wants to look good in order to buy a few votes, expropriate the Company property and assume all of its environmental liabilities. The Newfoundland fishery has been mismanaged for decades and the Government and Unions are always looking for a scapegoat to blame it all on. I remember back in the 1970's when the crowd down on South Coast turned on the Lake family fish business and got rid of them Now it is OCI's turn to be punished for trying to make a go of the fishery when everything was put in their way to stop them. Any businessperson who thinks that setting up a business in Newfoundland is a good idea needs to rethink that idea and move elsewhere in North America where their business is wanted and their efforts will pay off. Newfoundland is a bottomless money pit run by a bunch of fools!

As the issues with OCI swirl about I can't help but wonder how things would play out if Loyola Sullivan had been elected in the recent election. It certainly appears the results messed up some people's plans. There is such a nasty smell that it begs some kind of enquiry by people a million miles from the NL fishery. But it will never happen and things will never change because we very much still have "fish "merchants" all around us.
