A huge majority of cafeteria workers in the Eastern School District have voted in favour of a strike, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) said today.

Some 93 per cent are in favour of strike action. There are 105 cafeteria workers in Local 4885, all employed by Compass Group Canada (Chartwell’s). The labour dispute affects 42 schools in the district.

CUPE national representative Ed White said the workers need a living wage and decent working conditions.

“The employer needs to understand that the cost of living in this province is going up and up and wages and benefits must reflect that,” White said.

The current wage rate for general help is $10.25 an hour, while a lead hand makes $11.75 an hour.

The contract expired May 31.

I think the comments that are made about cafeteria workers are very harsh to say the least . Alot of these workers are well educated women and work very hard and have many certicates to back what they do . if your child ended up getting sick from food poising would people say oh thats to be expected they are un skilled workers or would they expect them to have the proper food safety practices and traing . Questions people should ask themselves before making comments such as the ones made.

ANOTHER SET OF UNSKILLED WORKERS WHO THINK THEY ARE WORTH MORE THEN THEY REALLY ARE

As usual, another bunch of workers that do work that does not require a specialized education think they are entitled to more money. BUt if they are worth more than minimum wage, why not find a job that pays what they want? perhaps it cannot be done because they are really not worth more than minimum wage. One of my contracts is to provide cafeteria workers and security guards for a couple of office buildings. I use a temp agency to staff these positions, and the workers get minimum wage and no benefits. Anytime a worker tries to address getting more money or benefits, I call the temp agency and request that that worker no longer be assigned to my buildings. For this specific line of business, I just want worker who will accept minimum wage and do the job that they are paid to do. Those who want more money need not apply! I see the same thing happening here. If the cafeteria workers do get more money, taxpayers will have to foot the bill. Personally, I would rather not foot the bill for increased wages for unskilled workers.....almost anything else would be a better use of the money.

Cafeteria workers: you have no working skills that are even worth paying $10.25 an hour for, except that it has been decreed by government. If you want more money, get more credentials and skills....very simple. No not easy, but that's life as an adult. You make your bed, you lie in it.
