Two school principals from Newfoundland and Labrador will be honoured next month in a special ceremony in Toronto.

These exceptional educators have each been honoured with the Outstanding Principal award for 2012, an accolade presented annually by charitable organization The Learning Partnership.

This years winners from this province are; David Hamlyn, Leo Burke Academy, Bishops Falls and Christina Pike, St. Pauls Junior High, St. Johns.

Winners are chosen by a pool of nominees whose names are put forward by their school staff, peers and students. Nominations are reviewed and final winners chosen by a national selection committee.

Both principals will receive their awards alongside 38 of their peers in a gala dinner and ceremony on Feb. 28.

Congratulations to Ms. Pike and Mr. Hamlyn. I'm sure their efforts are deserving of the awards. Teachers and principals are generally under appreciated and their daily efforts to have a positive effect on their students should be recognized and supported more frequently. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of the journalistic efforts of Mr. MacLean. He has mastered the ability to copy and paste a press release word for word. Bravo! It appears that he didn't even make a minimal effort to re-write the press release to make it look like a news story. And where was the editor that allowed this to pass as a story and be published? Maybe both Mr. MacLean and his editor could have used the talents of prize winning educators to improve the quality of their respective efforts. David Ryan A Tely Alum
