A strike scheduled to start Monday by school cafeteria workers in the eastern part of the province has been averted.

The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE), which represents the 120 workers, reached a tentative deal with Ontario based Chartwells during a last minute meeting Saturday.

CUPE spokesperson Ed White declined to reveal any details about the deal, but did say the membership would be holding ratification votes on Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

All the affected cafeterias would have been in the Eastern School District.

$15 an hour to reheat convenience food in a school cafeteria. Some of the best restaurants in the city are not paying journeyperson cooks that. Chef de Parties at the top hotels barely make that. You obviusly do not know the food industry. These untrained people should get no more then $11 another reason why unions don't work in the food industry.

Brilliant post. Untrained workers or unskilled workers are not much worth more than minimum wage. Some of the posts here just boggle my mind. Giving a wage increase means that taxes have to increase taxes to pay them.. Should the parents who send their kids to school with a lunch have to pay more in taxes for unskilled careferia workers whose food their kids don't even eat? I think not. Hopefully the contract will eliminate some jobs to that any increases in wages will not translate to higher taxes. It is possible to serve the same amount of children with less workers.

if someone is willing to work for less, that person should get the job

I am sick of paying more in taxes when I should be paying less. The company should be looking for the cheapest workers to do the job, not negotiating wage increases with unskilled workers. Especially we the taxpayers are footing the bill. In the name of taxpayers respect, the company should be free to hire the worker who is willing to work for the least and ensure that the costs to taxpayers go up.. Every penny more that these unskilled workers will end up cost taxpayers more. Wouldn't we all rather keep out money in our pockets, and spend it on our own family. Let's all hope that the contracts stipulates less total workers, so the burden that taxpayers will face with this contract is less.

Well said. Like the other guy said earlier. What pay them $15 dollars an hour. I works at McDonald. I'm making only 11 an hour and we actually have to cook food. Those cafeteria workers only gotta put it under a heat lamp or toss it in a microwave. I think they should only get 10 an hour

hopefully these workers are going to make more than min wage now, as they were totally underpaid. 15 an hour starting off is more like it...now if only we would pay respite workers a fair wage too

Lets hope this "deal" does not cost anything to taxpayers

I would have felt better if atleast SOME jobs were eliminated or some concessions were won by the company. Nothing against the workers, but I would accept any alternative to a deal for the workers that results in increased taxes. Hopefully the company held the line and the workers capitulated.
