The top 55 spellers in grades 4 to 8 from across the St. John’s region will gather at the College of the North Atlantic on March 3 to compete for a $5,000 top prize in The Telegram St. John’s Regional Spelling Bee.
The competitors had to out-spell over 1,800 other students in school-level competitions to make it to the regional finals. The winer of the regional competition will also win the opportunity to head to Toronto for the Postmedia Canspell national finals and a chance to win $15,000 in Postmedia Canspell Education Awards.
Telegram publisher Charlie Stacey said the paper is proud to be involved in a competition that promotes the study of language.
“Canspell is a great literacy initiative and a truly positive experience for all those involved,” he said.
The St. John’s spelling bee will be hosted by the CBC’s Ramona Dearing, and begins at 2 p.m.
