Award-winning St. John’s director Jillian Keiley has been named the National Arts Centre’s new artistic director of English theatre.
Keiley is the founder of Artistic Fraud theatre company, and has directed and taught across the country and internationally. With a masters degree in theatre from York University, she won the Siminovitch Prize for directing in 2004, and has also won the Canada Council’s John Hirsch prize. She has taught workshops and given lectures at MUN and universities across the country, and her productions have included “Tempting Providence,” “Afterimage,” “Fear of Flight” and “Emile’s Dream.” Keiley is currently directing “Oil and Water,” on which she collaborated with celebrated playwright Robert Chafe, at the Factory Theatre in Toronto. She has worked regularly with the National Theatre School of Canada.
“Jillian Keiley is a brilliant theatrical artist who is rooted in Newfoundland, but also has a wonderful sense of the country,” said the National Arts Centre’s president and CEO, Peter Herrndorf. “She’s worked with artists and theatre organizations in every part of Canada, and we’re thrilled she’s chosen our national stage for the next chapter of her extraordinary career.”
“There are very few jobs in Canada which I would be prepared to leave home for,” Keiley said in a media release. “The position at the National Arts Centre is one of them, because I believe as the NAC’s artistic director of English theatre, I will have the opportunity to do work which will reverberate across the country.”
During her first season in her new position, Keiley will be directing “Metamorphoses,” a Mary Zimmerman play re-imagining 10 classical myths.
