The RCMP has not yet determined if the 37-year-old woman found dead outside a Farm Road house in Deer Lake died of suspicious causes or natural ones.

Police responded to a call 10 a.m. Friday and found the woman dead near the basement door of a duplex.

Candace Callahan, who lives in one side of the duplex where the woman was found, said she knew nothing about it until her son called asking why the police had the area taped off.

“I heard there was a lady found just out there by my basement door,” Callahan said. “So I looked here in the window and I could see that it was (her).”

Callahan said the woman visited the other tenant in the duplex quite often, often banging on the door to get in.

Thursday night before dark, Callahan said, she had a few words with the woman about regularly banging on the door. When no one answered, Callahan said, the woman got into a parked truck behind the house.

Doug White, who lives next door to Callahan, said he’s known the deceased since she was a child. He said she often visited his apartment, looking after his cat while he worked away. Around 6 p.m. Thursday, White said, he dropped the woman off at her friend’s house nearby and did not see her afterwards.

He said he found out about her death when he left his house to go to the store. He added he knew nothing about her being near the house Thursday evening.

White said he is close to the woman’s family, and the family is devastated by her death.

“I don’t think there’s anything other than a tragic accident,”  White said. “Whether she fell or had a seizure or whatever … I don’t want to speculate.”

The woman's body was taken to Corner Brook to be examined by the chief medical officer.
