A man was detained in St. John's Saturday night for allegedly stealing a tree.

According to the overnight police report, the RNC K9 unit was patrolling on Kelsey Drive when the officer noticed a man digging up a tree outside the Metro Bus Office on Messenger Drive.

The man fled the scene with the tree but was pulled over a short time later by patrol officers on the Outer Ring Road.

A 41-year-old man was charged with theft under $5,000 and released to appear in court at a later date.

The tree was recovered.

A tree, really! He should have taken a trip on the highway, lots of trees on side of the road.

I wonder if his case will be handled by the Criminal Investigations BRANCH?

This is a theft, no matter what the item. How would you feel if you took the time and money to purchase and set a tree on your front lawn to add some beauty to your property and someone dug it up overnight? Margie posted about trees being taken from a cemetery. Really, is that funny?

Doesn't matter. Theft is theft. He should be lucky he wasn't charged with trespassing.

lmao even though all those comments were hilarious to read i think the story is gone a little overboard. Yes it was wrong to take a tree that wasn't his but come on people there is so much REAL crime happening in this city and the idiots are gettin slapped on the wrist for it and this man...who is not very smart either...gets a charge of theft. Something wrong with that picture.

He stole. Got caught. Getting punished.... What's wrong with that!? The only thing wrong is that it probably doesn't happen as often as it should...

Johnny AppleSeed would not be happy about this matter.I remember I once read ""God has cared for these trees, saved them from drought, disease, avalanches, and a thousand tempests and floods. But he cannot save them from fools." - John Muir .Go figure the mind set of this idiot.I hope the tely follows up and publishes the court date so we can know who it is and laugh him into the forest.

I wonder what "spruced" up this idea, people like this are the "root" of all evil.. he should just "leaf" the trees where they are so everyone can enjoy them instead of "planting" his "seeds" of mischief all over the place...

When I was visiting a local cemetery last Fall, I noticed a medium size tree was no longer by my parents' grave site, and mentioned it to one of the care takers. He said that a couple of nights previously a number of trees were dug up and stolen from the cemetery. Isn't that unbelievable?
