If paint cans are piling up in your basement, an initiative announced this morning will likely interest you.
Under a new paint recycling program, people can recycle waste paint at 29 locations across the province.
Environment Minister Terry French said recycling paint will be more convenient and accessible than ever.
He also touted the environmental benefits of keeping paint out of landfills and storm sewer systems.
"They can pollute the air, land and water," French said.
The program was launched at Handyman Home Hardware in Conception Bay South, one of the drop-off locations.
It is open to individuals, businesses and governments. All household and consumer paints, deck coatings, varnishes, concrete and
masonry products are accepted.
The initiative is being operated by the Product Care Association on behalf of paint producers and retailers in the province.
The Multi-Materials Stewardship Board (MMSB) will oversee it.
Chairman Leigh Puddister said the organization is looking at other industry-led programs.
By the end of 2013, there are expected to be 51 collection sites. For a list of paint products accepted and drop-off locations, visit
