St. Michael’s Elementary students will be under the protection of a new fire suppression sprinkler system, following the completion of a recently awarded contract that will also see the removal of asbestos from the Stephenville Crossing school.

The $2.4 million tender was awarded to Brook Construction of Corner Brook.

The asbestos currently poses no hazard to students but the sprinkler installation requires the removal of the fore-proofing material, according to a provincial Department of Education news release.

The work is expected to begin in early to mid-June, continuing through the summer and through the 2012-13 school year.

The school was opened in 1976.

Since 2004, over $3.6 million has spent on infrastructure upgrades at the school, including new roofing and windows as well as interior and exterior renovations.
