HAPPY VALLEY-GOOSE BAY, N.L. — Crews continue to battle a fire near the 5 Wing Goose Bay military airbase in Labrador.

Maj. Paul Doucette, spokesman for the Joint Task Force Atlantic, says the fire that broke out around noon on Friday is still not under control.

Doucette says high winds are making it difficult to battle the blaze, located just north of the base.

He says parts of the base and a nearby industrial area were evacuated Friday afternoon as a precaution, but the evacuation has since been lifted.

Doucette says the fire is a few kilometres wide, about the same size as it was on Friday.

He says two Natural Resources helicopters continue to douse water onto the fire, while several other military and civilian helicopters are assessing the area.

The RCMP report that there is no threat to the town as the fire has moved away from the community.
