Liberal Leader Dwight Ball was raising alarms about potentially hundreds of jobs being eliminated from Eastern Health in an announcement Tuesday.

During Question Period in the House of Assembly, Ball said that he's hearing the province's largest health authority will be getting rid of 552 jobs, to save more than $40 million.

Health Minister Susan Sullivan wouldn't confirm the job cuts; she would only say that Eastern Health will be holding a news conference Tuesday, and that an announcement will be made then.

Ball said he's worried that the cuts will have a direct impact on services. In the lead-up to this year's budget, the government said it was looking to find savings in government spending, but that front-line services in health care and other areas would not be affected.

Full coverage in Tuesday’s print edition.

Hi ROBROY - treated like dirt??? I can tell u for a fact that the average WHSCC rate for EH front line staff (ie Nursing Home and Hospital front line staff) is almost 13%. That's $13 for every $100 in payroll. Construction jobs are not even that high... Fact of the matter, you front line staff are the biggest abusers of WHSCC and sick leave. You find a way to get any kind of leave. How can you expect to get leave approved when you are always of sick.. Be thankful you have a job - or go elsewhere to work.

I have worked all my life with the Health Care, the only job I ever had, retired a few years ago,I have seen many strikes put on wage freezes and still walk away with nothing. How can our health care take any cut backs when there are so many workers doing over time as it is.It's going to be very interesting to see who jobs are going to take the cuts,I can tell you it's not going to be the top dogs that will go,hey Vikki.

Since's Newfoundland and Labrador's four regional health districts have received funding increases this year, how can Eastern Health justify cutting over 550 staff members and save money they don't need to save? Due to the doctor, nurses, and specialist shortage, Eastern Health should be hiring more, not cut.

I can see that many jobs in management going no problem I work in eastern health and the amount of managers that have been since the goverment took the reigns of the health care its crazy. if the fire gets to busy in management they fix it by adding more people Front line workers are treated like dirt.Forced to stay after their shift ends, working short, denyed leave The list can go on and on
