In Corner Brook, skateboarding is not permitted on any street or sidewalk and law enforcement officers may seize skateboards.

On Tuesday, RNC officers responded to a complaint of skateboarders in the area of Corner Brook City Hall.

Police were unable to locate the suspected skateboarders.

The City of Corner Brook bylaw regulating skateboard use also includes in-line skates.

While the use of skateboards on city streets or sidewalks is not allowed, people may use in-line skates.

The bylaw states that a helmet, elbow pads and hand coverings must be used when using skateboards, push scooters, or in-line skates. There is no mention of knee pads.

A separate Corner Brook bylaw makes it illegal to cause the confusion of pedestrians on a city sidewalk.

To each his own. We tell our kids to exercise but only if they wear inline skates and dorky pads. Outlawing skateboarding hurts a wider demographic than most realize and it's really silly. You're not allowed to put four wheels on a board and ride on it! How about the city build enough skate parks for everyone and keep them properly maintained? Well if that aint gonna happen, then don't hurt the people that you won't be helping anyway.

Steady on there Sir Percey. Stiff upper lip and all that rot. My guess is you're an oldfart - at least in the cerebral sense. It puts you right off your oats to see kids enjoying themselves. You're a rare find - the kind of geezer that all but disappeared with the horse and buggy. You're no doubt the kind that pays attention to every movement and idiosyncrasy of your neighbours in hopes of catching them out on some infraction real or imagined. But perhaps I'm being unfair. Perhaps you were traumatized by a couple of kinds whizzing past you on their skateboards - a tale of great peril and angst you can share endlessly with anyone who'll listen at the local Tim's. But I guess we all have to do something with our time.

Heads up to the men in blue: I hear the little kids on our street will be setting up a lemonade stand at 3 p.m. today.

It is high time that the City Of St.John's enacted a by law to prohibit skate boarding on city streets. It is illegal in Corner Brook, and it should be illegal in St.John's. I see them all the time in the downtown area, on the sidewalks, and in and out of the streets. I thought we had skate board parks for the skate boarders to use? NO?? If I, or any other citizen was walking out in the streets of St.John's, we would be arrested and charged. End of story. Come on City officials, and get your head out of the sand, before it is too late. I say, it is NOT if, but when, that some person(s) will be injured, or an accident with a vehicle, here in St.John's. In saying that, I say, GOD forbid. So, we have skate board parks for the teens to use, so that should be the end of the story. However, unfortunately, it isn't. Now, I understand, the City is building another skate board park by Quidi Vidi Lake. Again, I say, why isn't there a By law, to make it illegal for teens to skate board on City streets, and sidewalks?

Slow day in Corner Brook or slow day at the Telegram? How dare kids skateboard - and right under the mayor's nose at City Hall. You're not a cop anymore Greely - get a life. BTW, I am doubtful that Corner Brook has ever gotten a conviction for skateboarding or that any fine has ever been levied. Providing they're not endangering pedestrians or damaging property, we should let these kids be kids - that includes doing things like skateboarding which we might not like and which no doubt has risks for the skateboarders, but we can't regulate every aspect of a kid's life. Leave that up to their parents. Despite its claim otherwise, the city of Corner Brook does not in fact have the right to seize skateboards. The relevant section of its Act gives it the right to prohibit or control skateboarding (itself a legislative reach) but contains no right to seize private property. If challenged in court, it would be struck down. Given furthermore that the section of the Act under which skateboarding fines would be levied is vague and excessive (up to $1,000 and/or 60 days in jail), the imposition of any fine under such circumstances would likely be struck down.

You are kidding me? This story warrants a space in the paper....I suppose it is great that there is no "bad" news, but seriously? Skateboard violators?

Do people have anything better to do with their time than worry about a child on a skateboard? I can see a concern if they were in heavy traffic or congested areas like Water and Duckworth or Kenmount and Torbay in St. John's, just in case they loose control or weave into traffic. However, there should be no conern in an average area either on the sidewalk (preferred) or street. The Crner Brook ban is crazy! BTW, I don't do either.
