Nearly half of Newfoundland and Labrador residents support the legalization of marijuana, according to a new survey from Corporate Research Associates (CRA), while a quarter of the population supports the legalization of brothels.

The latest polls, released June 14, show that men, younger residents, and those in the highest income bracket support the legalization of marijuana.

The CRA poll shows 47 per cent support, with 44 per cent opposing legalization, and nine per cent being undecided.

Those numbers are similar to Atlantic Canada totals, with this province showing the second highest support for legalization after Nova Scotia.

While the marijuana issue is relatively evenly split, the legalization of brothels is opposed by 52 per cent of Newfoundland and Labrador, with 24 per cent supporting and another 24 per cent undecided.

Nova Scotia had the highest support for legalizing brothels, with 34 per cent approval, while Prince Edward Island had the highest opposition, at 59 per cent against.

The CRA poll results are based on a sample of 1,518 adult Atlantic Canadians, conducted from May 10 to June 4, with overall results accurate to within ± 2.5 percentage points, 95 out of 100 times.

"Nearly half of Newfoundland and Labrador residents support the legalization of marijuana"?!? More like "the vast majority of...". Who's this "nearly half", b'y..? I don't remember being "surveyed". Mark me down for one in the "Newfoundland and Labrador residents who support the legalization of marijuana" category, if any one is keeping tabs on the "yeas" versus "nays" in the online court of public opinion. Not that it stacks up to your fancy little CRA survey that ain't worth squat. Oh...and I am a 47 year old male, if you must know, if that somehow quantifies if not qualifies my opinion (also causasian, middle-bracket income, two jobs, mortgage, wife, two teen kids, two cars, cul-de-sac....living the dream). This should be a NON-ISSUE in this day and age. The social, political, legal, economic, medical and global ramifications of legalization have been thoroughly argued. Legalize weed and lives will be saved. Legalize weed and you deal a huge blow to the cash flow of gangs, cartels and organized crime; in doing so, freeing up law enforcement resources to go after hard drugs, like coke, meth, heroin, oxy, the shit that ruins lives, and those that push them. THAT'S what the majority of Newfoundlanders, Canadians, want. It's hard not to rant when it's something this hypocritical, non-sensical, stupid and ignorant of facts or logic.

But if it's legalized, you'll take away a source of income from criminals and biker gangs, give police and courts more time and resources to deal with actual crime, and prevent otherwise law-abiding citizens from having to associate with sketchy drug dealers! Sounds like a lose-lose situation to me.

@ Sheldon and Don't believe it...You two represent the misinformed percentile that don't agree with decriminalization or legalization.. Though I feel that you have a right to your own opinions, as skewed as they may be, it is very obvious that most people don't agree with your take on the issue.. It has been uniquivocally proven that marijuana is relatively harmless and most certainly safer than alcohol and tobacco on both our health and on it's overall effects on society in general. I could go into a long drawn out diatribe on the effects of the so-called legal stuff as opposed to what is surprizingly still illegal, but you all have heard the arguments before. For the advocates of legalization, all I can say is, be sure to vote against the PCs in the next general election so that we can get Harper out and get someone in who will look at this issue with more common sense and not be swayed by the influence of our big brother to the south..Government stands to gain more by legalization than by keeping this innocuous substance illegal and spending trillions to enforce it...

so out of 1518 people they were able to determine that nearly half of population of NL think it should be legal?? where is the logic in that? The only true way to tell for sure is if they actually ask EVERYONE. this study/survey is a JOKE!

I think that marijuana should be legalized, I am not into drugs, but if drugs such as marijuana was legalized, then the use of other hard drugs would be reduced,if a young person want to get a High they will try what ever they can get, and the drug pusher will sell them anything they can, so drugs are that plentiful on the streets, that they should be sold by a place like a liquor store, to people of the right age and not children

The numbers seem HIGH. Would like to see the sponsor, questions and contexts as these influence the results.

Would that 50% be the people who are using it or the 50% who are selling it?

With both current levels of government being PC Majorities, this poll is nothing more than a waste of money and an annoyance for most of the people called.

Look at the amount of time and money the police waste dealing with this stuff. We'd save millions just in not having to prosecute people for a harmless drug. Legalize it, regulate it, tax it and open more hospitals beds, lower tuition and have police worry about meth, piils and coke.
