District RCMP and emergency responders were at the scene of fatal accident on Park Street in Grand Falls-Windsor involving a school bus and a car just before 1 p.m. today.

While there were no children on the bus at the time, police have confirmed the driver of the car was killed. The bus driver was taken to hospital for examination.

An eyewitness told The Advertiser the car involved was a black Honda Civic.

The bus appears to have driven head first into a ditch on the opposite side of the road, and the second vehicle was not visible from a distance.

Police have not released the name of the deceased or the possible cause of the accident. Road conditions were good with clear, sunny weather.

A crowd quickly gathered at the cordoned-off scene, which was in a busy residential area of town near several churches, the YMCA and a primary school.

Police have declined comment on the matter, but more details are expected to come.
