The Americans redeclared war on Britain just before 1 p.m. today, and within minutes, there was a recruiting party on Signal Hill to draft new members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment.
The event commemorated the 200th anniversary of the declaration of the War of 1812.
It saw historical animators at Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial in Put-In-Bay, Ohio, making the mock declaration exactly 200 years to the day after US. president James Madison did so.
Re-enactors at Signal Hill responded by trying to recruit new members of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment of Fencible Infantry, which fought at every major battle during the War of 1812.
The two sites exchanged Skype feeds.
On Signal Hill, Chris Martin played Newfoundland Governor Sir John Duckworth and enticed onlookers to join by bragging about the benefits — which included the clothing, a shilling and continuous drink.
Five men signed up.
The event kicked off Signal Hill’s summer season, which is being dubbed, “The Newfoundland Soldier, Then and Now.”
