Vinyl siding illegally dumped off wharf: RCMP

The RCMP is investigating the dumping of a large amount of vinyl siding off the government wharf in Isle Aux Morts.

Local residents reported the dumping to Port Aux Basques RCMP, stating it had occurred sometime in the last month.

Officers are aware of possible witnesses to the illegal dumping, and are asking anyone with information to call Port Aux Basques RCMP at 709-695-2149 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

Dumping anything in a non-designated area is an offence under the Environmental Protection Act.

    ...People. Do not harm the environment. It is very hard for the environment to degrade plastic. I am OK with food, garbage (if it is teared to pieces very well). You can expect this very pile of plastic to be there for another 20 years. You are harming the environment, the tourism industry, and shows that you have a lack of respect for your communuity. it costs a lot to clean up those beaches....which can mean less money for people who depends on governmental support programs....Your choice. If I was you, I would drop it off at a fraction of a km down the road, than to get the world all upset. I have been living out of Canada for the past 4 years. It brought me great awareness how beautiful the province is, but yet we harm the environment around us. Nature is limited, people. In your words, small communities, garbage = even less fish and you do the math.

    The mentality of Newfoundlanders sickens me when they feel that they can dump their garbage anywhere. What happened to the days when we took pride of our surroundings and our province. I hope that the quilty party is found and charged to the max.

    We used to live in NL 9 months ago. We move back to BC to be closer to family. We lived in NL for four years and could never get over the amount of garbage on the side of the roads and house hold furniture and mattresses thrower over the banks by the ocean Not to mention the people who would just drive into the country and dump off stoves and alike . That was so disturbing to us. Such a beautiful province - yet no cares or worries about the people who move there or visiting to see garbage everywhere. We loved it there and did go down to the local beach and clean up more garbage the you can ever imagine,in fact the local town manager phoned me the next year and asked if we would be interested in cleaning the beach area the next year. And yes we did go down and clean it. Newfoundlanders places take some pride in what you have -- other are taking note and are amazed at the amount of garbage you throw out your windows and back of your pickups.

      Sherry, I've travelled quite a bit across North America. Newfoundland is one of the dirtiest, most backwards places anywhere. The irony is that people here can't stop blowing smoke that they love this place, the great wilderness and nature, the freedoms, the quality of life....it's all pure BS. They live in a garbage dump of their own making --- they just don't know any better, largely because they've never been anywhere else.

    The Ocean has been a dumping ground around the world. You would think that because Nflders are at one with the life giving sea that they would have respect for it. Obviously not. Mother Earth gets the last laugh as the cod ,the capelin,the lobster we eat is now contaminated with the chemicals from this dumping.

    Holy God! How lazy can you be?!?!?! The incerator is not even 20 mintues away!Its people like this that makes us all look bad! Isle aux Morts is one of prettiest commuites on the island and you get idiots doing this. How about taking some pride in your commuinty? This makes me sick!

      Krista, you have to get out more. Most rural Newfoundlanders act exactly this way. The roadsides en route to the local dumps are covered in garbage left by people who lose interest in driving just another fraction of a kilometere. Their "lazy" friends do even less --- straight to the woods. Shingles, siding, appliances, tires, paint cans, concrete, and cars. Anyone who thnks that these proposed regional 'superdumps' --- ones that are even slightly more inconvenient or will charge tipping fees ---- have any chance whatsoever is seriously delusional.

    You can rest assured someone knows who these mindless people are, and when they're found, they should be made to remove every single piece of siding while the media snaps photos of them! There is no excuse in this day and age!

    This happens all the time in rural Newfoundland (though vinyl siding just as often ends up in the sea due to high coastal winds, a "phenomena" that has not slowed vinyl siding sales in the least). Anyway....you can quite regularly watch people bring wheel barrow loads, truckloads and handfuls of 'permanent garbage' down to the beaches and toss it all in. It isn't even looked upon as littering...to Newfoundlanders, the ocean is the 'great cleanser', the receptacle of all garbage or undesired items. And no one says a word -- if one were to dare, they risk being shunned and ostracized as a troublemaker by the 'mob'. The Tragedy of the Commons, in living colour. God guard thee Newfoundfland. Ha.

      ...it's amazing how as NLers we get praise for being so friendly yet there are so many instances of "dump it', "shoot it", "drive over it" etc. You would think the same courtesy we extended to visitors would also be of the same attitude to not dump crap all over the place. "I'll tell you how to get there buddy, just a soon as I throw the McDonalds bag out the window! :(
