Sporting seal skin bow-ties, the provinces Lt.-Gov. John Crosbie and federal MP Peter Penashue gathered with others today in St. John’s to make a major fundraising announcement for a Sealers Memorial in Elliston.

The fundraiser aims to raise $2.5 million for the project.

“We're people of the sea and we can't escape that,” Crosbie said.

Penashue announced a federal contribution to the memorial of $500,000.

The memorial is planned to open in 2014, coinciding with the 100th anniversary of two sealing disasters.

not to take anything away from our brave sealers but 1/2 a million $$ would have gone a long way to saving a 14 year old boy who was lost on the ice in northern Labrador. anyone remember Burton Winters?

Crosby, a complete bafoon in upalong Canada, but a cunning fox back here in Newfondland. Wrap him in sealskin and drop him where the sculpins can get at him.

My, oh my, the long standing saying "you've got to have the right connections" is alive and well in this province. The who's who of the upper business establishment, Collingwood, former politician, Crosbie and former political aide, Power get Penashuie to cough up a 1/2 million for a plaque. This is absurd when there have been deep cuts made to health care in this province, including care for seniors, and many more areas by the Feds who say they have a tight budget and money is scarce for our essential services. This money could be used more wisely in other areas, especially on the Bonavista Peninsula, where they have one of the poorest employment and health care situations in the province, rather than buying a very expensive plaque. I totally disagree with the Federal Government giving such a large amount to this or any other social projects. I do, however, agree with the Sealer's memorial Group trying to raise money by personal or corporate donations and they are to be commended for that. The Federal government has no right to use our tax dollars for any such cause and for them to bow to the influence of this group is simply not right.

I had family who were involved in the seal fishery. Its nice to see that those who lost their lives prosecuting this fishery are to be recognized. Kudos to the provincial government. I hope this fishery whom some call hunt, continues in the name of all who died trying to make a living for their families.

I am the great granddaughter of one of the brave seal hunters who faced the dangers of the sea in order to look after his family in very difficult economic times. Anyone who has lived in Newfoundland knows someone who has lost their life to the sea while struggling to support their family - it is part of our culture and as such, a proper memorial is long overdue. I can understand that some people will say that $500,000 could be better used for healthcare, seniors, etc. - as all these areas need more funds - but this $500,000 will not be wasted and be without benefit as it will indeed benefit the people of the region as it will increase tourism in the area and in the future will benefit the region's restaurants, stores, tour operators, B & B's, etc.
