A nine-year-old girl riding her bicycle escaped injury this afternoon when she collided with a dump truck on Main Road in Butlerville.

Trinity-Conception District RCMP responded to the incident about 3:08 p.m.

The child was riding her bicycle when it veered into oncoming traffic. The driver of the dump truck applied his brakes upon seeing the child coming in his direction.

The child struck the truck and fell off her bike.

There appears to be no injuries as a result of the accident, however, the child was taken to Carbonear General Hospital to be assessed.

The child was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

I am very grateful the child is ok but why was she on a main road by herself, without a helmet? The parents or parent are certainly in the wrong. Lets hope nothing gets laid against the truck driver for someone else's wrong doing.

Poor kid AND poor truck driver--I bet both of them got the fright of their lives when that happened! I think the RNC and RCMP need to put more emphasis on bicycle safety, because there's a lot going on that really shouldn't be, and someone's going to get killed--and unfortunately it will probably be a kid. 1) It's the LAW to wear a helmet when on a bike 2) Bikes aren't supposed to be ridden on the sidewalk, they're supposed to be on the edge of the road--share the road, people. Also, bikes aren't supposed be ridden on a crosswalk, they're either supposed to turn like traffic, or be walked across the crosswalk. 3) Bikers are supposed to ride WITH traffic, not FACING it. Bicyclists are NOT pedestrians. I really think more public awareness about this; it is important and lives can depend on it.

      Bad Drivers...

I myself ride on the side walk, but I give full right away to walkers. If I see someone walking I stop and let them pass and if I need to I go off the sideway out ot traffic to let them pass. I WILL NOT be riding anywhere near trafic. The drivers in St. John's really don't know what they are doing and I don't feel safe sharing the road with them. I'm sure other places are just as bad. I'd rather NOT follow the "rules" and get back home to my kids then follow them and have doughhead driver hit me and then my kids have to grow up without a daddy.

Bad Drivers: I can totally understand that. I didn't mean to lay it all on the cyclists as if they were the ones to blame--I meant that the city overall doesn't seem to consider cyclists, which is a shame. If the emphasis on Bike Safety that I mentioned was done, drivers and cyclists alike could share the road, and then you wouldn't have to be on the sidewalk.
