Environment and Conservation Minister Terry French took several reporters to central Newfoundland to see what the government is doing in its $15.3 million caribou management strategy. Not far from a herd of woodland caribou — barely visible behind him — French talked to The Telegram about the importance of caribou, and what the government is doing to understand and protect them.

There are still plenty of moose and they are still a problem animal that cause many, many fatal MVCs every year. This whole "the moose are dying off" campaign is a complete lie. It's gun control advancing. It's one small step in the disarming of Newfoundlanders. "No need for rifles? Why should you have rifles then?" One small step at a time. The caribou, however, are being killed off by coyotes, who are the only new varible since the declining caribou numbers. Most moose can easily fight and kill several coyotes at once. Not so with the caribou.

The coyote is not the problem - look at the evidence. The predatory List goes like this: Human destruction of the environment, bears, indians, over-population 12 years ago because of mismanagement, poachers, eagles, coyotes, lynx and few/far between and non-responsive game warden/enforcers. Get out of the trucks and go in the woods. Moose season 1/3 of the hunters are using their wives tickets......... The "Big White Hunters" like the guy that shot the Wolf a few months ago and should have been charged just look for a scapgoat - the coyote. If one shoots a Moose and says "gee I thought it was a cow" would surely be charged and fined and lose everything he had with him. What is the difference in shooting the Wolf ?

They should let coyote hunters know where the herds are so they can take care of the predators. They are following the herds around so that's where a lot of them would be.
