Erin Bursey, captain of MUN’s women's volleyball team, passed away Tuesday evening, succumbing to her injuries from a pedestrian-vehicle accident Saturday evening in St. John’s, according to Memorial University’s website mun.ca.

On the website it stated: “It is with deep sadness that Memorial  Athletics announces the passing of one of our best and brightest student-athletes.

“Erin epitomized the definition of student-athlete, a two-time CIS Academic All Canadian, an athlete that competed fearlessly and always left it all out on the floor.

“A leader and friend among her teammates and varsity athletes across all sports, her presence will be missed. Erin was a multi-scholarship award winner, most recently winning the prestigious Frank T. Butler Memorial Scholarship, presented to a student-athlete that best combines athletic commitment, academic success and contribution as an ambassador in the community. She certainly left an amazing mark on the multiple community groups that she gave of her time as a volunteer.

“Erin recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Psychology and was looking forward to a return to school in September to complete her 5th year of eligibility and was excited at the possibility to compete at home in the 2013 AUS Women's Volleyball championships.”

I agree with holding judgement and not jumping to conclusions, as too many comments have been made on public forums regarding this tragedy by some people and I can only hope the TRUTH will come out soon so the family of this young girl can have some closure. Accidents can happen, but just because it was a young woman who has 2 children does not mean she can be any less careless or cautious than anyone else time will tell.

    - June 28, 2012 at 16:08:29

I am taken aback by such disrespectful comments. I understand the need to ask 'why?' when such a tragedy occurs, but please keep your comments to yourself. Now is not the time to try to place blame or to make such comments about the accident. Now is the time to grieve for a bright light burned out all too soon, to mourn the loss of such a beautiful soul and to celebrate the remarkable life of this young woman, a shining star who will surely shine even brighter amongst the angels in heaven. Please be respectful with your comments and bear in mind the many hearts that are broken today. May this beautiful girl be remembered for the way she lived her extraordinary life and not by the way she died. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends during this devastating time. May you find comfort in your memories of happy times and in the legacy she has left behind. Rest in peace dear child.

This town is a terrible place to be a pedestrian or a cyclist for that matter. Nobody stops their cars at cross walks. Drivers barely slow down at stop signs. I wish I had a dollar for every incident where I was nearly run over by someone yakking on a phone or ignoring a cross walk. Even the Constab in their cruisers blast through crosswalks most of the time. Our streets are not safe.

My condolences to Ms. Bursey's parents on the tragic loss of their daughter. I'm at a loss to understand why tragedies like this happen. It gives one pause to wonder if there really is a God. And do not give me that 'God's ways are not mans' ways' , garbage.

AR.....I had same doubts ...God is real , but so is the devil ......the driver of that vehicle with his/her free will is the blame ...the devil is the one we are fighting against. ..our lives are the battle ground...devil comes to steal kill and destroy... My heart is broken as well for this tragic loss to us all ..

My sincere condolences to her family, a very sad loss !! I believe we should wait until we get the facts of what really happened and not place blame just yet. Sometimes bad things happen to good people. I hope that through this horrific tradegy her family will find some peace knowing that they gave the gift of life to so many others by donating Erin's organs. I know that feeling all to well, my sweet child is alive today because of families like Erins. It is indeed bittersweet for all involved. God Bless this family and may Sarah soar among the Angels!!

So many assumptions. The driver was not drunk, nor high, nor did they leave the scene of the accident as many people seem to believe. If from what news reports are saying about the accident being in front of North Atlantic on Thorburn, it would imply the girl was illegally crossing the road much like many others do in the area. But I pass no assumptions until everything is released to the public.

There is a pedestrian triggered light just about there, so let's not assume she jay-walked. Listen, it was 10:30 at night, it was dark, it may be a situation of wrong time, wrong place for Erin and the driver. Let's leave the professionals to figure out if any fault is to be blamed. For now, just let us mourn the loss of a great individual.

Clarification: The driver of the vehicle was neither drunk, nor high, or traveling at dangerous speeds. It was simply a tragic accident

It was a woman driver though. Hopefully she wasn't talking or texting on her phone. Please, people, drive with both eyes in front of you!

My heart goes out to Erin's family and friends at this time . We have truly lost an amazing young lady who had so much to give . As an Aunt of my nephew who has benefited from 3 liver transplants it warms my heart to know that her family generously donated her organs . That is just such a kind and thoughtful gesture on your part . Rest assured you have made many families forever grateful . I only wish that in Canada that we could connect with the families involved . However , I thank you from the bottom of my heart that you shared your lovely daughter with others . May God give you the much needed strength to bear this cross . Treasure her beautiful memories . God Bless .

I would like to comment on the other comments... seems many on here have jumped to the conclusion that the driver had to be impaired or drugged out ..sorry guys the woman driver was a young lady, the mother of two small kids, who was going on an errand. Please do not make it harder on that family either. I am so sorry this happened , and my condolences go out to the family of Erin. Please hold your other comments until you find out the truth Thank you

Maybe if the city start putting video surveillance at all crosswalks and intersections, just like up in Calgary. In Calgary if you run a stop sign or red-light the camera takes a picture of your license plate and then the person who's name the car is in gets a fine in the mail.. I think that would help a lot. Come on Newfoundland get with the program or It will get worse no doubt.

You make many asusmptions in your comments. As I read related comments I often wonder what goes through the minds of people that jump to conclusions. The publishers of these comments have accused the driver of many things and none of them founded. I will reserve the right to lay blame until we hear the facts of the story. Condolences to family and friends of Erin.

So sad to see this beautiful life lost. What is it going to take to change our views about traffic issues. So many drunken drivers, people getting high and driving on the roads- when will we recognise the seriousness of this problem? How many more innocent lives to be lost before we wake up and take note? Rest in Peace sweet soul, God grant strength to her friends and family.

Although I agree with your statement about how dangerous and reckless it is to drive under the influence, don't jump to conclusions about this particular case. We, the public, do not know anything about the circumstances leading up to this extremely tragic accident. Sometimes accidents happen, with devestating results, but pure accidents none the less. Condolences to the friends and family of this beautiful young girl.

Sometimes an accident is just that, a tragic accident. The driver of the accident involving Erin was in no way impaired, or violating any traffic laws. She was the victim of a tragedy, NOT a negligent act.

Very sad; A tragic accident. The next one may be at the top of Kanas Hill at Torbay Rd./Loggy Bay Rd. intersection where they fly through the insignificant YIELD sign located below the top of the hill. Time to smarten up Dennis and City Hall before we have more fatalities. Condolences to the Erin Bursey family. Look up and see another shining star in God's Universe.Tragic in another crazy traffic area. City of St. John's negligence in protecting the pedestrian public on Thorburn Road continues. Totally rediculous for years.
