Marine Atlantic is hoping to have the MV Atlantic Vision back in service by July 3 to service the Argentia to North Sydney crossing.

The starboard gearbox on the ship is broken, and the ship was forced out of service Monday evening.

“We’ve identified the issue and we’re currently waiting for parts to fix the problem,” said Marine Atlantic communications officer Darrell Mercer.

“It’s a mechanical piece of equipment, a technical issue, and a new part is required to fix the problem,” he said.

Passengers affected by the cancelled crossings were refunded their tickets and given free passage on the Port aux Basques route. If further delays affect passenger travel, Marine Atlantic will contact passengers directly, said Mercer.

They're speeding up scrapping the "Smallwood" and making room on the beach in India for this one too! Meanwhile, Versatile Davie and other Canadian shipbuilding yards are crying for orders. Oh, Canada. Sigh
