A man has died after his canoe overturned near Dover in an area known as the Tickle.
The man was found by a couple returning from a family outing, report Gander-Lewisporte district RCMP.
The couple saw the overturned canoe, and after getting closer, saw a man face down in the water. The RCMP has confirmed the deceased as Douglas Keats, 60, of Dover.
His lifejacket was found a short distance away.
Keats’s family has confirmed he was a non-swimmer. They also told police that Keats had paddled out to a boat moored in the area, which was not uncommon for him to do.
He had been gone about an hour when he was found by the travellers.
Weather is not suspected to be a factor in the incident, and an autopsy is being conducted to determine the cause of death.
