People evacuated from cabins, campers due to forest fire

People in cabins and campers north of Wheeler’s River on the west side of the Trans Canada Highway on the province’s west coast have been evacuated by the Stephenville RCMP due to a forest fire.

Forestry officers, local fire departments and water tanker (water bombers) are on the scene of the fire in the area of Southwest Brook and the Burgeo Highway, according to a news release.

 Barachois Search and Rescue members are also on the scene assisting with traffic control and water patrols.

RCMP officers from Burgeo detachment en route to assist as well.

The RCMP reports that, at this time, traffic on the TCH is not impeded but police are asked the public to stay out of the area.
