The Gander-Lewisporte District RCMP is advising motorists of a sink hole in Terra Nova National Park. The sink hole is in the 60 km/h zone near the Administration Building and the Warden’s Office. The RCMP is asking people driving on the Trans-Canada Highway to slow down in the area. Park safety personnel will give directions to traffic and lights and barricades are being erected in the area.

Pics or it didn't happen! Also making it a 4 lane highway would be much easier then by passing it. the extra area on both sides through the park isn't going to ruin anything.

How are you going to cross the Exploits River when that bridge collapses? Is this not one of the sections of the highway that washed out during Igor? Why is it that smaller culverts are still being replaced with steel ones which will once again rust out when plastic ones are available which have better flow characteristics as well as being corrosion proof?

Yes a few pictures would have been nice and a little more information about this. A lot of people are on the highway today not just for Salmon Fest but for vacations.

Rattler, that's another reason why you should e-mail Premier Dunderdale and the Transportation Minister, Tom Hedderson, to get a bypass road built along Terra Nova National Park or around this park so that Eastern Newfoundland, the province's main population centre, will not be cut off from the rest of the province when natural disasters occur. Once again, the other three Atlantic Provinces have bypass or alternate routes to their major population centres to prepare for natural disasters, and now is the time for Newfoundland and Labrador to do the same for ours, being Eastern Newfoundland.

In light of Hurricane Igor and the Great Terra Nova Sinkhole, perhaps now is the time for every single Newfoundlander and Labradorian to petition the government for a trunk or alternate road across the park or between Central and Eastern Newfoundland so that we are prepared more effectively for natural disasters. At this time, there's only one major highway that connects Eastern Newfoundland to the rest of the province, and that's the TCH through Terra Nova National Park. Since Eastern Newfoundland, which includes the area between Terra Nova National Park and Avalon Isthmus, Avalon Peninsula, Burin Peninsula, and Bonavista Peninsula, is the province's main population centre, this area needs an alternate, trunk, or backup road so that people will still travel to that area and goods are shipped even during a natural disaster. That way, Newfoundland and Labrador will be in line with the four other Atlantic Provinces with a main highway to a major city, but also have trunk and alternate roadways in an event of an emergency using Nova Scotia Highway 102, a main thoroughfare between Southern Nova Scotia and the rest of Atlantic Canada, as a good example.

The one part of the highway I dread is the section through Terra Nova. Slow moving tracker trailers and motorhomes with no passing lanes and forests right up to the sides of the road. Perhaps it's time for a bypass around the park.

How big is the sinkhole? Do you know when the road might be reopened to traffic like salmonfest?
