PELHAM, Ont. — Three people are dead and five people are in hospital following a two-vehicle crash early today on a rural road in Ontario’s wine country.

The crash occurred near Pelham, Ont., south St. Catharines.

Const. Rich Gadreau of Niagara Region police says four of the injured are in serious condition and the fifth needed to be airlifted to a hospital in Hamilton.

He said the crash occurred just after 1 a.m. when the two cars approached from opposite directions (on Regional Road 20).

“The westbound vehicle drifted across into the eastbound lanes, causing a head-on collision,” Gadreau said in a media briefing at the scene.

He said four people were in each car and three of the people who were killed were in the same vehicle.

No names, ages or genders have yet been released, nor have police said what may have caused the crash.
