Hockey Canada’s appeals committee has overruled Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador’s (HNL) one-year suspension of junior B hockey coach Brian Cranford.

HNL elected to suspend Cranford after his Mount Pearl Mark’s Work Wearhouse Junior Blades failed to attend the opening ceremonies and closing banquet for the Don Johnson Cup Atlantic junior B championship held at Torbay’s Jack Byrne Arena in April.

Cranford and the Blades maintained the reason why the team did not attend the off-ice events is because most of the players were studying for exams.

The appeals committee determined, “the decision to suspend Mr. Cranford should be overturned effective immediately.”

Hockey Canada does not comment publicly on the appeal committee’s decisions.

David , I have to agree with you. I do not think studying was the reason for the no- show. This is the same coach who wrote in the paper that Humber Valley Red wings who won the Central West Coast Junior B Hockey do not deserve to play for the Vitech with them the winter. . So I find this to be a bit unbelievable. Been there and done that dealing with the east coast sport community and HNL..

Good call on the reversal. Too bad because HNL is getting worse than the board of Mt. pearl minor hockey, and that is saying something.

Common sense has prevailed. A black eye for HNL.

In light of Hockey Newfoundland and Labrador received a bodyblow from Hockey Canada in their heavy handed suspensions, I'm glad that Hockey Canada stuck to their credo, "relax, its just a game", and overturned Cranford's suspension. I also hope that HNL has learned a valuable lesson, education takes precedence over sports and there's more to life than Hockey.

So glad Mr. Cranford's suspension was overturned,I know NOTHING about hockey, but I knew this was N.F.L.D, junior hockey team, the decision to suspend him ,seemed a little over the top to me,it's not the N.H. L for heavens sake. A little power,is very often, taken too far.

No one with a grip on reality believes for one second that this had anytihng to do with "studying". But what we have "taught" these kids is that if you come up with a good story, and get some good media attention going, there's a great chance you can get off with anything in this increasingly backbone-challenged world.

Good, I think HNL has their heads in their ... anyway! He was obviously looking out for the best interest of the players.
