Who would you send to Government House?

It's no surprise that Prime Minister Stephen Harper often looks to The Telegram and its readers for political advice. In that spirit, we're asking you to help the PM choose the successor to John Crosbie as lieutenant-governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. Crosbie's appointment is expected to end in early 2013 and Harper is likely mulling over his options. Who do you think deserves the honour of being named the next lieutenant-governor of the province? Post your nominations in the comment section below by July 31, 2012 and then we'll compile a list of top candidates and ask readers to vote. Will Stephen Harper listen? Probably not, but it's a fun discussion to have over the summer.

Rent it out for dinner theaters, weddings, anniversaries, parties. Make it a bed & breakfast make it useful ... put LG to work running the place, then the public can visit the place not just invited guests. As for LG ... Ray Johnston ...talented , entertaining

I believe St. John's city councillor Shannie Duff would be the perfect Lt. Governor for Newfoundland and Labrador. She has a passion for culture and heritage. She would do well to represent the many cultures of our province. I am Mik'maq (mic mac) living on the Conne River reserve and has raised my family to be proud of who they are and the culture they represent. I watched Shanny for many years. Listened her speak out against those who would tear down St. John's Heritage areas and replace it with sky scrapers or shopping malls. Yes, she is a warrior at heart and would represent all of Newfoundland Labrador well. Shannie for Lt. Governor ... wha! :o)

Moyra Buchan, former Executive Director of the Newfoundland and Labrador Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association. She always showed poise, grace, compassion and discretion as she worked to make people's lives better. She would be excellent as the Queen's representative in the province.

ME!!!! All of the other people are "the important and/elite". Why not start a new tradition and allow (as Bill Rowe would say)..."an ordinary mortal" I consider myself to be as "good, important, competent, intelligent" as anyone else. I'm a quick learner, love to talk, meet people, a general interest in politics etc. As the optimist would say.."Why not" Afterall, allowing a "regular" person like me the chance to have an important position such as this may cause quite the stir. Maybe people would compare what I would bring to Government House in a similar manner to what Kate did for the Royal Family. Like Kate, I do wear the same outfit more than once!!!! Thank you for your votes and consideration, I look forward to the opportunity.

How about Paul Raynes for Lt. Gov.? He'd spice up the stuffy, bland position with his non-stop, loud, mind numbing, frenzied jabber. The number of visitors to Gov't. House would decline quickly, of course.

Paddy Daly will accept the position of Lt. Gov., but only on three conditions. First, there must be at least four mirrors in every room so he can admire himself from all angles. Second, there must be one hair dryer in every room. Third, he has to be permitted to wear jeans all day, seven days a week regardless of the occasion. If these conditions are not a problem, the position of Lt. Gov. would be top shelf for Paddy.

Hey, why not Steve Kent for Lt. Gov. ? He's been sitting in the backbenches of the House of Assembly for so many years and passed over more often than the old Overpass. Now he's got to deal with all that $hit with the Boy Scouts and their sexual abuse cases and you know that he'd love to get away from all that mess. Can't you see Steve wearing his Boy Scout uniform with his 786 badges, serving hot dogs from the barbecue at Gov't. House ?.

Clyde Wells, are you daft????. They would have to double the salary just as the Liberals had to do for him to take the job. And what did he do for government employees but renege on a contract, rescind increases bargained in good faith and withhold contributions to their pension plan. Couldn't fill his own pockets fast enough but had no qualms about taking it from the pockets of others. How about Paul Johnson or Ches Penney, two self-made men who have shared their good fortune with the province in many ways. Men who are not self-serving, egotistical or vain.

Have a seance and a chat with Bucky King to persuade him to take the job. It's not as if the position actually requires the Lt. Gov. to be at all these functions in person. Bucky could simply smile and show his biceps at a seance in the gardens at Gov't. House. Perfect.

What is this a POLL or just a bad couple of news days. This story has been using up space where more important things could be published. WE do not need any involvement with this poition any more and NOBODY should be appointed and the position should be abolished. Most people, myself included, do not want a Lt. Gov. nor anything to do with the queen or the monarchy. It is a total waste of time, tax dollars and a beautiful property that could be made into a park so all can enjoy. We do not need any more political patronage appointments, put the money to better use by helping the homeless or some other cause that will benefit the less fortunate and please end the daily showing of this useless story and everything it stands for. AND weither or not you agree with my comments please print them.

Get rid of the Queen and Canada. Become a republic. In the mean time, have an election for it with a maximum serve time with no chance of being re-elected, just like the US President is elected and how our Senate should be. Until then, Tom Han or Frank Galgay.

How about moving the RNC horses from their little corner in the back into Government House? They have the skills required for this position; absolutely none. This house, land, and position with its huge salary, are totally unnecessary, and should be given up, and sold. Also, the Senate. They do whatever they want with taxpayers' hard earned money (most of us), no matter how we feel or what we say. One good suggestion......look at the drastic situation with Urologists in this Province.

Ed Roberts was the best lieutenant govenor in a generation. And Pavre, what planet are you living on. Rick Hillier would be an excellent choice!!!! for LG. I graduated from MUN and I am glad we had such accomplished men as Roberts and Hillier as alumini. I don't disqualify someone simply on the basis they are wealthy or former politicians or military men. Granted there are some politicians out there who can't tie their own shoe laces and yes, they would not make the best LGs. It would be hard for me to give a pick for a female LG because I agree with some of the criticism directed at many of the names mentioned here. However, it would be tough to come up with better candidates than Hillier or Pinsent. I would probably go with Pinsent as he is 82 tomorrow and I would think this would be his chance at LG.

We need someone who would represent the Queen and the Commonwealth of NL. There are so many names being thrown out here, and the only one I see credible is Mr. Hillier The likes of Williams and and minions of the same background (politicians) municipal and provincial are so over rated. People like Crosbie and Roberts do not fit the profile of someone to hold such a position. Andy Wells, Shannie Duff, and the rest of the wanna be's should be fortunate they are in positions they are in now. I think Mr. Harper should appoint someone like Karl Wells or Bob Cole. Both men are well known, liked and respected. I think they would do a commendable job! How about Mary Walsh?

I have done my homework on this matter and selection should be done on the basis of a lottery restricted to NL residents and the name drawn from a hat on Christmas Eve night. That way everyone interested could buy a ticket and maybe win the big prize. There would be no hard feelings and the money raised could be used to support the on going operations there. As well the house is too big for 2 people so 8 additional second prizes of accomodations for 6 each months for 8 lucky couples could be given to live there as well in 6 month time slots.Hey here is a list of past Goverors and they would all agree I think if they were alive!!!! You guys got to be kidding - Ray Johnson; Elaine Dobbin; Andy Wells; Danny Williams; Shannie Duff - John Crosbie is definitely too old and I am not against age - however, why first of all don't we get someone that is not old enough to be everyone's grandfather/grandmother - some new young blood. Second of all, if we have to go that direction, I think Rick Hillier would be great.

Susan Patton would be great as LT Gov. She is not a politician but a proud Newfoundlander, a philanthropist and a big supporter of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. This position is not just about rewarding someone with an appointment, it is very linked to the activities of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and anyone in this position should have an interest in cultivating the rich history of these fine soldiers and their contributions in WW1 as well as supporting the activities of the soldiers currently serving.

Anyone who says Danny Williams is out to lunch. First off, Stephen Harper wouldnt appoint him, there is a long shot he might just to shut danny up since the LG has to be non partisain. Second, I just can not see him accepting the position. He already sacrificied a large junk of his business career to be premier. Depending on your view he either did this to either help the province, to get power or a combination thereof. So for him to give up his business interests again for another few years in a ceromonial position in which he has no actual power and zero influence on government, in a position that most people think is outdated and useless seems a little crazy. He also wouldnt be able to bite his tongue enough to do this job well. I think he did a great job as premier for the most part but he wont be LG. I do think Gordon Pinsent could be a good choice

Yeah David, that's why Elaine won Philanthropist of the year! And to correct you, Craig Dobbin is the one who insisted the Autism Centre be named in Elaine's honour. And also, Elaine made a very significant contribution to Memorial University of Newfoundland, in part, so that the new Genomics research centre would bear her late husband, Craig Dobbin's name, but more importantly, because Elaine wanted to honour Craig's commitment to the development of the centre...a commitment he made long before his passing. Where have you put all of your money? Your comments only serve to reveal your ignorance. Puke? It's time for you to grow up.

David, Where has Elaine Dobbin put her name exactly? The Elaine Dobbin Centre for Autism? That was not her decision. What is she spending money, exactly? Oh, are you referring to the large donation she made to the Faculty of Medicine in honour of her late husband, that will be named after him? Sounds like a bit of jealousy there. Do your homework before you slam someone's reputation. And since you have no idea of the work, time and yes money that she and Mr. Dobbin have spread throughtout Newfoundland and Labrador and beyond, for health, education and to help out individuals, then maybe you should just keep your uninformed opinion to yourself.

While I have no problem with the monarchy, I think the cost in running that place could be better spent...Search and Rescue, for one! But since Harper is going to do what pleases Harper, and not redirect that money into something useful, how about we look at someone who has fought for Newfoundland and Labrador since entering politics in 1974, George Baker. I know, I know...wrong political colour. But lets face it, he has served our province and not some hidden self-serving agenda since day one and who out there can say a bad word about him? Yup, that's the guy who would get my vote.

I agree with Pitt. Get rid of his largely waste of time and money institution and the political patronage that goes along with it. The money could be better spent assisting people who have to travel long distances for critical medical services. However common sense will not prevail, so if there must be someone there, make them young and able enough to do some of the work around the place such as cook their own meals and clean a bit. Spend those savings on something more important. But as I said common sense will not prevail, so if there is going to be a figure head in the position, at least make it representative of the whole of the province, not just St. John's. Drop Shannie Duff from any list she may be on and go with someone widely known who has given to the arts or philanthropy. Stay away from a past political figure who is looking for a few more easy years on the public payroll.

Let's be honest..this post is a fiqure head and has no power. It will be given to a former politicain that is washed up and has nothing better to do. My guess is it will either go to one of the Loyola's (Hearn or Sullivan).

Why not just have a lottery? Sell tickets on it and let Joe Blow have a chance. It's not like the job requires any skills.

ShannievDuff is a good choice. Shannie is passionate about the heritage & culture of the city & province. She always stands up for what she believes in even if it is not a popular opinion. She is not afraid to speak her mind. I think these would be good qualities for this position.

Come on people, Prime Minister Harper doesn't know Shannie Duff from a hole in the ground (although she would be a good choice seeing she loves old heritage homes). You know who Harper will choose........ wait for it........Senator Fabian Manning. Sad but so true.

Shannie Duff is an absolute NO. Danny Williams - while an awesome advocate for the province - needs to keep doing what he's doing. He would be better for the province away from the throne. Don't pick a "celebrity". I can definitely see Elaine Dobbin in the role.

Peter Penashue would make a great Lieutenant-Governor . The job requires no real work, good pay and no REAL skills. Besides, it would be a bonus to the rest of Newfoundland and Labrador to have him OUT of Cabinet. Psss, don't tell this to Steven Harper. SHHHH.

I do not know what Shannie Duff did to deserve the position?? Also, think that it is a complete waste of tax dollars---really just a cushy high paying postion that is not necessary. Complete waste property and much too large of an estate for one person to live in. Could be put to better use!!!

Firstly, what in the world has Shannie Duff done to warrant such a position? Now, lets move to reality; the next person should be someone who made an impact on the entire Province and not just for keeping St. John's in the dark ages.

That's exactly why Duff would be a good choice. LG is a useless position, so it's right up her alley. As LG she wouldn't be able to cause any more problems.

I think that Elaine Dobbin would be an excellent choice for Lt. Governor. She is a very eloquent lady who has always been involved in Provincial and Community based charities and projects. Both Elaine and her late husband (Craig) have been major philanthropists.

I agree with the suggestion of Clyde and Mrs. Wells. He was always a statesman with integrity. If Wells doesn't want it, why not Vic and Elaine Young....? Mr. Young's experience in negotiations while he was with FPI proves his excellent track record as a spokesperson. Mrs. Young was on the Board of the Health Care Corporation of St. John's and is also very socially skilled and dignified.

    Choose A Disabled Person
    - July 5, 2012 at 11:02:22

At first I was going to suggest an aboriginal person, but disabilities occur across all areas of our people so I chose a disabled person. The role of Lieutenant-Governor is only ceremonial and should be reflective of our people. Let's get past the rotating protestant-catholic thing and the gender-balance stuff. Disabilities can affect all. Let's show that a disabled person is as much a part of our society as the politicians and rich people. Let's nominate an Autistic person.

How about NOBODY. Why not abolish this absolute waste of money that wastes thousands of taxpayers dollars each year. Crosbie was an old fart when he was chancellor of MUN back in 1996. The person to replace him will only be another old dustbag who sucked up to the PC/Conservatives over the years, doing nothing really, but enjoying a fat pension.

Pitt, I agree with you 100%. This position is not necessary and a total waste of our tax dollars. It should be abolished. It is nothing more than a political patronage appointment to people who are so full of themselves and do not need the money. Take the money and put it into social programs to help the needy, homeless etc. etc. that will make a difference to our society. Make Govnt House an historic tourist site where people can go and witness first hand the absolute waste this position was just to satisfy some monarchist socialites whim for more power and influence. We don't need a Lt. Gov., (especially Crosbie who is a disgrace to this province), we don'y need a rep of the Winsor family or Great Britan and we certainly don't need the waste of our tax dollars to subsidize this fairytale for the rich and famous. It is at best the biggest and most expensive joke of our time. Down with the upper class, forever!!!
