It's no surprise that Prime Minister Stephen Harper often looks to The Telegram and its readers for political advice. In that spirit, we're asking you to help the PM choose the successor to John Crosbie as lieutenant-governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. Crosbie's appointment is expected to end in early 2013 and Harper is likely mulling over his options. Who do you think deserves the honour of being named the next lieutenant-governor of the province? I believe St. John's city councillor Shannie Duff would be the perfect Lt. Governor for Newfoundland and Labrador. She has a passion for culture and heritage. She would do well to represent the many cultures of our province. I am Mik'maq (mic mac) living on the Conne River reserve and has raised my family to be proud of who they are and the culture they represent. I watched Shanny for many years. Listened her speak out against those who would tear down St. John's Heritage areas and replace it with sky scrapers or shopping malls. Yes, she is a warrior at heart and would represent all of Newfoundland Labrador well. Shannie for Lt. Governor ... wha! :o)

Why not start a new tradition and allow (as Bill Rowe would say)..."an ordinary mortal" I consider myself to be as "good, important, competent, intelligent" as anyone else. I'm a quick learner, love to talk, meet people, a general interest in politics etc. As the optimist would say.."Why not" Afterall, allowing a "regular" person like me the chance to have an important position such as this may cause quite the stir. Maybe people would compare what I would bring to Government House in a similar manner to what Kate did for the Royal Family. Like Kate, I do wear the same outfit more than once!!!! Paddy Daly will accept the position of Lt. Gov., but only on three conditions. First, there must be at least four mirrors in every room so he can admire himself from all angles. Second, there must be one hair dryer in every room. Third, he has to be permitted to wear jeans all day, seven days a week regardless of the occasion. If these conditions are not a problem, the position of Lt. Gov. would be top shelf for Paddy.

WE do not need any involvement with this poition any more and NOBODY should be appointed and the position should be abolished. Most people, myself included, do not want a Lt. Ed Roberts was the best lieutenant govenor in a generation. And Pavre, what planet are you living on. Rick Hillier would be an excellent choice!!!! for LG. I graduated from MUN and I am glad we had such accomplished men as Roberts and Hillier as alumini. I don't disqualify someone simply on the basis they are wealthy or former politicians or military men. Granted there are some politicians out there who can't tie their own shoe laces and yes, they would not make the best LGs. It would be hard for me to give a pick for a female LG because I agree with some of the criticism directed at many of the names mentioned here. However, it would be tough to come up with better candidates than Hillier or Pinsent. I would probably go with Pinsent as he is 82 tomorrow and I would think this would be his chance at LG.

I agree with several of the above commenters that it is time for a woman. I would also like to see a truly non-partisan appointment (Rick Hillier would not count here, unless you are truly deceiving yourself). Perhaps a journalist or artist?

We need someone who would represent the Queen and the Commonwealth of NL. There are so many names being thrown out here, and the only one I see credible is Mr. Hillier The likes of Williams and and minions of the same background (politicians) municipal and provincial are so over rated. People like Crosbie and Roberts do not fit the profile of someone to hold such a position. Andy Wells, Shannie Duff, and the rest of the wanna be's should be fortunate they are in positions they are in now. I think Mr. Harper should appoint someone like Karl Wells or Bob Cole. Both men are well known, liked and respected. I think they would do a commendable job! How about Mary Walsh?

I have done my homework on this matter and selection should be done on the basis of a lottery restricted to NL residents and the name drawn from a hat on Christmas Eve night.That way everyone interested could buy a ticket and maybe win the big prize.There would be no hard feelings and the money raised could be used to support the on going operations there.As well the house is too big for 2 people so 8 additional second prizes of accomodations for 6 each months for 8 lucky couples could be given to live there as well in 6 month time slots.Hey here is a list of past Goverors and they would all agree I think if they were alive!!!! Susan Patton would be great as LT Gov. She is not a politician but a proud Newfoundlander, a philanthropist and a big supporter of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment. This position is not just about rewarding someone with an appointment, it is very linked to the activities of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and anyone in this position should have an interest in cultivating the rich history of these fine soldiers and their contributions in WW1 as well as supporting the activities of the soldiers currently serving.

Anyone who says Danny Williams is out to lunch. First off, Stephen Harper wouldnt appoint him, there is a long shot he might just to shut danny up since the LG has to be non partisain. Second, I just can not see him accepting the position. He already sacrificied a large junk of his business career to be premier. Depending on your view he either did this to either help the province, to get power or a combination thereof. So for him to give up his business interests again for another few years in a ceromonial position in which he has no actual power and zero influence on government, in a position that most people think is outdated and useless seems a little crazy. He also wouldnt be able to bite his tongue enough to do this job well. I think he did a great job as premier for the most part but he wont be LG. I do think Gordon Pinsent could be a good choice

And also, Elaine made a very significant contribution to Memorial University of Newfoundland, in part, so that the new Genomics research centre would bear her late husband, Craig Dobbin's name, but more importantly, because Elaine wanted to honour Craig's commitment to the development of the centre...a commitment he made long before his passing. While I have no problem with the monarchy, I think the cost in running that place could be better spent...Search and Rescue, for one! But since Harper is going to do what pleases Harper,and not redirect that money into something useful, how about we look at someone who has fought for Newfoundland and Labrador since entering politics in 1974, George Baker. I know, I know...wrong political colour. But lets face it, he has served our province and not some hidden self-serving agenda since day one and who out there can say a bad word about him? I agree with Pitt. Get rid of his largely waste of time and money institution and the political patronage that goes along with it. The money could be better spent assisting people who have to travel long distances for critical medical services. However common sense will not prevail, so if there must be someone there, make them young and able enough to do some of the work around the place such as cook their own meals and clean a bit. Spend those savings on something more important. But as I said common sense will not prevail, so if there is going to be a figure head in the position, at least make it representative of the whole of the province, not just St. John's. Drop Shannie Duff from any list she may be on and go with someone widely known who has given to the arts or philanthropy. Stay away from a past political figure who is looking for a few more easy years on the public payroll.

I think that Elaine Dobbin would be an excellent choice for Lt. Governor. She is a very eloquent lady who has always been involved in Provincial and Community based charities and projects. Both Elaine and her late husband (Craig) have been major philanthropists.

Mr. Young's experience in negotiations while he was with FPI proves his excellent track record as a spokesperson. Mrs. Young was on the Board of the Health Care Corporation of St. John's and is also very socially skilled and dignified.

Pitt, I agree with you 100%. This position is not necessary and a total waste of our tax dollars. It should be abolished. It is nothing more than a political patronage appointment to people who are so full of themselves and do not need the money. Take the money and put it into social programs to help the needy, homeless etc. etc. that will make a difference to our society. Make Govnt House an historic tourist site where people can go and witness first hand the absolute waste this position was just to satisfy some monarchist socialites whim for more power and influence. We don't need a Lt. Gov., (especially Crosbie who is a disgrace to this province), we don'y need a rep of the Winsor family or Great Britan and we certainly don't need the waste of our tax dollars to subsidize this fairytale for the rich and famous.
