A two-vehicle, head-on collision at the intersection of Blackmarsh Road and Empire Avenue in St. John’s has sent a woman to hospital with what appears to be non-life threatening injuries, and two children to hospital for observation.

The accident occurred about 11:45 a.m. today.

Traffic in the area is down to one lane following the accident while the RNC investigates and the scene is cleared of the damaged vehicles and debris.

The accident was responded to by the RNC, St. John’s Regional Fire Department and rescue vehicle, and two ambulances.

      There are no lights at that intersection. Someone was heading East and collided with someone making a left hand turn is my guess. People tend to drive pretty fast on that section of BM Road.

    Actually the crosstown arterial is not Empire Avenue, that is Columbus Drive. Empire meets Blackmarsh just past the Captain Whelan Drive intersection, up where the Eastern Gate Church is located. That part of Empire is considered Empire Avenue West.

    Yes, it is Empire Avenue. One of the many mysteries of St. John's roads. A legacy of yesteryear.

    Where does Blackmarsh Road meet Empire Avenue? Does this actually mean the Crosstown Arterial?
