There doesn’t appear to be any serious injuries in a four-vehicle accident that occurred over the lunch hour at the intersection of Portugal Cove Road and the Prince Philip Parkway.

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department and the RNC are on the scene.

East-bound traffic is being diverted down Portugal Cove Road as both east-bound lanes are blocked with damaged vehicles.

Traffic is slow in the area as emergency crews deal with the accident and the RNC investigates the cause.

For all of you who've commented and whoever wrote this.....there is no such thing as an "accident" when 4 vehicles collide, some one f'd up. Plain and simple, please stop reporting vehicle collisions as accidents.

WOW!! So many comments on this... Gotta leave one. Did Mart down the road find the sock that she lost off the line in the backyard the other day?? If not.. Lets get to the bottom of it and find out where it went.. It was blue with a white rim on the top. The heel was a little worn also.

I really disagree , this has nothing to do with townie/baymen driving. It is people being distracted , thinking they can run the yellow/red , and not coming to complete stops. Im almost 16 and cant wait to get my permit. But noticing the mistakes alot of people make on the road frightens me. You really gotta pay attention and have youre foot ready for the brake! Ive noticed that on the real busy parts of the highway. Not very many people check there blind spot nor do they follow the merging onto the highway correctly. Im not sure what we can do to stop some of this. But it is very scary for those trying to get on the road themselves.

It's people like you that give Newifes bad names, i'm from the bay as well, and have lived in many major cities in Canadan and newfies are by far the WORST DRIVERS every! every day when i walk to work it's like playing frogger, PEOPLE RUNNING RED LIGHTS, not looking both ways at cross walks, there has been many times, i'm just about half way in the crosswalk and the drives start to drive head, he's looking to his right and don't even turn there heads to see if anyone is using the cross walk. I"m so sick of drivers in St. John's. Bigger fines are not going to fix the problem acuatlly have police force that does it job and cameras installed in dangers interections will help. Instead of a fine, take there car, selll it and but them in Jail ..!!!!!!!

What worries me is the people driving like they're in a rural community of 100 people. You see this all over town. People don't indicate, drive slower than the flow of traffic, stop to let people cross the road when there's no crosswalk, stop to let people out, etc. I can anticipate people being late on a red. I can't anticipate someone not holding their lane on an turn and running me off of the road. The City of St. John's should require a road test for new residents. People who have grown up in the metro area typically can drive fairly well. Those from outside and typically not very good drivers.

Well if youre going to go that far, it should be mandatory for all townies to pass a road test before driving on the highway. Put a townie out there and it's just like a deer (moose?) in the headlights. They're lost!! The whole" keep right except to pass" thing and moving over in the passing lane to allow merging cars to enter doesn't seem to register or apply to townies.

I think there should be cameras at these intersections to catch red-light runners. There was a story on CNN the other night about several eastern states (NY, NJ, Mass., Virginia) that have these installed cameras in their major cities. The accident rates at these intersections have been reduced dramatically as a result of the cameras. Though I wouldn’t hold my breath that the government here would anything progressive like this. We can't even get the lanes painted on the streets here.

Regardless of the cause of this accident, I completely agree with putting in cameras and giving hefty fines to those who go through red lights or even to those who enter an intersection when it is obvious they won't make it through before it turns red (the Parkway through MUN is a prime example). City Council and the Province need to agree to pass the appropriate legislation, then allow cops to seize and sell any (non-stolen) vehicle driven by someone with fines over $5,000 which have been unpaid for more than a year. We'd clear the roads of people who knowingly create situations where an accident is likely, and of those who rack up fines, as well as those who enable them. Put it on a referendum if you have to Kathy D.! Let's do this!

Something DEFINITELY has to be done about drivers running red lights! I don't know if upping the fines is going to help as there are so many people who just ignore fines. But there has to be something that will prompt drivers to drive more cautiously.

I do not know what happened in this accident and I hope that everyone is all right. What frightens me is the way drivers in this city are running red lights and speeding through intersections. I know the police can't be everywhere so I don't know what the answer is, maybe a fine of $1,000 for failing to stop at a stop sign or running a red light??
