A 26-year-old was stopped by the RNC at 7 p.m. Thursday for riding a dirt bike in the central area of St. John’s without a licence, registration, and insurance.

He was also charged with operating the bike on a roadway in a dangerous manner with no helmet, and two breaches of court orders, and owes nearly $12,000 in outstanding fines.

Is there any other people on Earth so thin-skinned and insecure as Newfoundlanders? You'd all rather accept, ignore or even defend one of these numerous, absolutely brain-dead idiots than take a joke....'fine' then. You made a much more damning, true indictment of yourselves than my joke did.

David: You are showing your ignorance. I guess when a murder in Ontario (e.g.) hits the news, we should think, "All Ontarians are killers". You are not too bright are you?

I have lived in many different Provinces in my life and I've never before seen so many people who owe tens of thousands of dollars in fines as I've seen here in NL. When we moved here 2 years ago I was shocked to see a story in the telegram about an individual who owed $9000 in fines, the following week it was $15000, then $10000 etc. It seems like every other week someone else is stopped by the police and its "discovered" that they have accumulated a ridiculous amount of unpaid fines. You really have to try very hard to get $10000 in tickets. The people who are guilty of this don't care because there doesn't seem to be any deterrent in place to stop them from amassing these tickets. In other Provinces you can't re-new your car registration, your drivers license or get your car inspected with any outstanding fines on your record. The problem lies somewhere within the government system that allows this to happen time and again. There is also a real lack of police officers in St. John's, for a city of this size with the amount of robberies, stabbings and traffic violations we need a much larger police presence to put a stop to this nonsense before it spirals totally out of control.

Perhaps people here just don't get the concept. When the policeman says the word "FINE", he's most likely not expressing any dgree of personal contentment....he's charging you a financial penalty that must be paid. Maybe Newfies simply really ARE as stupid as the joke books say?!

Who are you calling Stupid David? Correction, Not everyone here in Newfoundland are stupid. Just because some people here in Newfoundland make stupid choices, don't mean that EVERYONE are Stupid.
