Singer/songwriter Ron Hynes will begin a rigorous treatment program next month for throat cancer, his manager says.

The Man of a Thousand Songs will begin radiation and chemotherapy mid-August.

A week ago, Hynes' manager Lynn Horne issues a statement saying Hynes was dealing with a health issue but feeling OK, and would continue with his performance schedule until a minor surgery was scheduled. He would then take a couple weeks off to recuperate, she said, declining to elaborate on Hynes' condition.

"I'm staying positive and expecting the very best outcome at this time. Thanks to all for your concern and well-wishes," Hynes said in the statement.

Horne told The Telegram Saturday morning surgery is not in Hynes' current treatment plan. All his scheduled shows for the rest of the year have been cancelled, she said, with the exception of a performance with The Wonderful Grand Band at Memorial University's Havin' a Time: Reunion variety show at Mile One Centre Aug. 11.

"I think his spirits are good," Horne said, when asked how Hynes — who is not doing media interviews at this time — was feeling. "Ron's a fighter and he's a man of great faith."

Hynes, best known for penning and performing tunes like "Sonny's Dream," is a Genie award winner and multiple East Coast Music Award winner.

This is very upsetting news to hear indeed but as many of the posters here say you're a fighter Ron and and others have won battles with this illness, John Prine for one. Stay on that positive road you chose and remember your support network has long tentacles. Speedy recovery my friend.

Thinking of you Ron and will hold you close in my prayers. Your music is never far from my ears --your songs are the best! Was there anything written more evocative and poignant than Atlantic Blue? You can leave us all alone with your heart. Fight with all your might and I'll keep playing your songs.

Ron, I wish you all the best in your fight against Cancer. You're a strong, determined Man and this is just one more battle in the long list of battles you've faced. You'll beat this one just like you've won over every other challenge in your life. Life is never easy, but you could write a book on what you've fought for and won.. Including your career. When others said "No", you said "Yes"... Some day soon you'll be saying "yes, I did it!!" to this too. Your friends, family and fans are all behind you. Stay strong.. we'll be praying for you!!

Sorry to read of Ron's illness. Two years ago my cousin was battling throat cancer and went through a very difficult time. It had migrated down his esophagus. Today Rick is cancer free, he wanted many times to give up but encouragement from family, friends and thanks to God above, he did not. You may have a difficult journey going through treatments Ron, but hang in there, I'll be praying for you..
