An apartment fire in Port aux Basques on Thursday left a man in his 60s homeless and claimed his pet dog as well as most of his belongings, report the Red Cross.

The aid agency has provided the man with emergency clothing, food, and personal care items.

The man’s apartment unit was extensively damaged, and the other units in the four-unit apartment suffered smoke and water damage.

The other residents were expected to return to their homes over the weekend.

The fire is suspected to have started in the kitchen of the man’s apartment.

My heart goes out to this gentleman. As an animal lover - losing a pet is like losing a child. I can only imagine his grief of not being able to save his dog. I can only hope that everything turns out well for him. My thoughts are with you.
