The Bay St. George RCMP have set-up live traps in the Lourdes West Bay area in an attempt to catch “wild” dogs in the area.

The police have received several complaints that the dogs are attacking pets in the area.

The RCMP is advising residents to keep their pets tethered or penned to ensure no family pets are caught in the traps.

Update RCMP Wild and roaming Dog Traps unsuccessful, All Government Department Federal and Provincial has been contacted many times nothing. Department of Natural Resources refuse to help or even contact any of the Farmers on this matter, All Government Departments are passing responsibility on to each other. No one wants to do anything. The people wonder if the Government is trying to wipe all the small farmers. Maybe they are personal share holders with the big farmers abroad and trying to kill the little guys in Newfoundland so they can import there products. Maybe Government plans and wants to wipe out the small scale Livestock farming industry in Newfoundland, when it comes to farming it does not get dealt with, Wild and Roaming Dogs still at large. Livestock, Wildlife, Pets and Humans are all at risk and more danger and loses awaits a head, while these dogs are still out there. The requests have been made and the cries of help was heard, Much lost and money gone, Farmer are discourage and Hopeless, The Small Farmers have no one to help them. Government sits back and lets it happen. I am beginning to feel like a sheep and the Government are the wolves. Sam Jesso

Community public Pastures are needed because Farmers don’t have enough land of there own. The land they do have is use for there Hay crop. There is not allot of good Farm Land in Newfoundland. . Some of these Pastures are up to 100 km’s away. .LGD Dogs Don’t work for that. You need to be there everyday. There is lots of different Farmers used these Pastures. LDG Dogs works great for Farmers with there own land and Private Pastures Not Community pastures. I want to know what is being done. I want an update from our Government. I want you MHA Tony Cornect ask what he is going to do about the wild dogs and roaming dogs in his district. Also Department of Justice Minister Hon. Felix Collins, what are they going to do about the Dog Act and to up grade it. Also Minister Hon. Jerome Kennedy, Q.C., What his office is doing to help the Farmers?? Also Sgt Marc Coulombe, RCMP "B" Division regarding The Policy and Legislation related to the Firearms Program comes under the responsibility of the RCMP. Its time for the RCMP and The Government to crack down on the roaming dogs with more enforcement, for the Provincial Dog Act to be changed to reflect tougher fines for people who let their animals roam free and to catch the roaming dogs by setting up traps with live animals for bait. The Act currently states a person who is guilty of an offence under this Act is liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding $200, and in default of payment of the fine to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months. I want changed where the fines would be a minimum of $2,000 and a maximum of $5,000, in default of payment, imprisonment not exceeding two years. If they have no money, compensate the farmer by providing free labour based on prison rates. The types of traps would have to be set up in such a way that they catch the dogs without them being able to get at the livestock that would be put in a protected area in the middle of a series of traps. "That's the only way to catch these dogs that are roaming free. They won't likely go after any other type of bait. It’s great to have a community pastures in West Bay Centre and around the Island; most farmers gave up using it due to issues in the past with rustling, but more now because of the problem with the roaming dogs killing livestock, like Second income farmer Glenn Hinks of Mainland experienced last year. In the past there was a farmer who lived fairly close to the community pasture and would keep an eye on it, but that man has since died and there is nobody from West Bay Centre or nearby Lourdes farming now and that's where these roaming dogs seem to hang around. There are about five of these dogs, which look to be Labrador retriever crossbreeds, hanging around the pasture and the dump area of West Bay Centre and Tea Cove those dogs have to be caught. "Government needs to step in and send a strong message across that if you are a dog owner, then you need to feed them and give them the proper care. Huge fines and tougher enforcements need to be put in place and farmers need more rights to deal with these issues and have more power in dealing with the dog owners," . An exemption for livestock guard dogs needs to be made as those dogs need to be able to be at large on the farmer's property doing their job of protecting the animals. Specifically because of the problem with the roaming dogs, farmers are stagnant and cannot increase the amount of livestock they keep because they only have so much space to pasture them. "This is forcing some farmers, who have other jobs, out of the business because they just can't spend all their time trying to protect their livestock. If more and more people give up farming it will eliminate competition and people will definitely end up paying even more for food," This has been for many years now its time for a change and it has to stop.

Hi my name is Sam Jesso.I am a small scale Goat and Sheep Farmer from the Ship-Cove, Port au Port area. I have been involved in the Farming industry all my life 30 years plus a third generation Farmer. We have had more dealings with dogs and Dog owners many times in the past in our area more than you can ever imagine. There are more roaming dogs now than there ever was .The Laws need to be upgraded and the RCMP should crack down in having more enforcements to be put in place to control untethered not penned and roaming . This is one of the reasons why some of us stop using pastures. Now we are left with no choices and not able to increase in our Livestock Herds. There are witness’s that seen the dogs that has been killing Mr. Hink’s sheep on West Bay Pasture. The dogs look like Labrador retriever cross. There are 2 Blacks, 2 whites and one darker red or tan in colour. It is led to believe that the dogs are hanging around West Bay Pasture and the Dump in that area. You got to use live bait to catch and hunt theses dogs. In order to rid of the dog problems in Newfoundland. The Government needs to step in and send a strong message across. If you are a Dog owner feed them and give them the proper care they need that they should have. Huge fines tougher enforcements to be put in place. Farmers need more rights to deal with these issues more power in dealing with the Dog owners (Very important ) and much more support and (changes) to the laws to be put in place for the farmers to deal with these issues for to get help that they need in catching or destroying Dog’s and to be fully compensated without dispute. These Wild dogs have owners or use to. We have to realize Food doesn’t grow in the Grocery stores and not at MacDonald’s that most of us eat from. It comes from Farmers. If we have No Farmers most of us will starve. The Less Farmers we have the higher prices you will pay for to buy your food. If Farmers don't get the help and the support they need in Port au Port area and the rest of Newfoundland. The few Farmers that are left you might as will Kiss them all Good Bye Action must be taken by the Government ASAP. It's in there Hands now Farmer Sam Jesso
