The St. John's Regional Fire Department and paramedics helped an elderly woman off the trail around Signal Hill at noon today.

The woman was able to walk narrower portions of the trail, holding onto chains while emergency personnel assisted her.

Once safely off the trail, the paramedics took the woman to an ambulance to be transported to hospital.

The Signal Hill path/trail is a wonderful trek. I have done it many times. That said, each times I come close to the area where chains are available to hold onto, providing a little more security because of the VERY NARROW path, I still cringe...and wonder...how come more people haven't been lilled or seriously injured; a small stumble or distraction and you can be killed falling onto a cliff-face, and/or falling into the waters of the harbour entry, from a significant height. I think something more can be done to providr greater security. Another thing that has caused me to pause are the joggers...mostly joung men and women who use the trail to jog! I think it's a terrific trail for that, but some of the runners have no sense of the risk they pose to themselves or others by not even slowing their pace for a few seconds to pass...but, just charge past with just inches between themselves and other users. It is only a matter of time before there is a death by mis-adventure due to a jogger. JOGGERS PLEASE USE YOUR COMMON SENSE ON THAT RAIL...AND PERHAPS OTHERS.

Wonder why an elderly woman would go on the trail by herself. Where was her family? Who pays the bill for these rescues??????
