The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is investigating a homemade explosive device found on the tennis courts at the Wedgewood Park Recreation Centre this morning.

Police were notified of a suspicious package after city staff discovered the device.

Police say the staff followed all safety protocols. The city was assured by the RNC there was no danger to anyone inside the facility.

The city completes site safety checks of all outdoor recreation facilities each morning to ensure they are safe for residents. The city is currently conducting a second site safety check of all outdoor and indoor recreation facilities as recommended by the RNC.

As a result of the incident, all outdoor sport facilities will be closed this evening and the city apologizes for any inconvenience.

The RNC is reminding citizens that if they ever come across any suspicious device or package, do not touch it and immediately contact the police.

Victoria Park had a children's event yesterday and was not cleared by anyone. In fact from what we can tell no RNC were visible there at any point yesterday to have a look around. There was also a ball game on last night there. So City Hall should be more accurate in it's press releases.

Has the RNC been able to identify the bomb had real explosives or just some awful foolish prank?
