Wabana — Firefighters, the RCMP and the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) were busy today with a brush fire on the North side of Bell Island.

The Wabana Fire Department alerted the RCMP on Bell Island about the fire, which is on open land, at 10 a.m.

The department’s efforts were hampered by wind, dry conditions, and slow access to equipment, and the fire spread to more than five acres.

DNR sent in a crew of forest firefighters and a fixed wing water bomber. After several drops of water and fire-retardant foam, the crews brought the fire under control.

Two homes are near the fire but are not considered at risk.

The RCMP and DNR will monitor the area overnight. If more fire suppression is needed, crews will continue work in the morning. An investigation into the fire is ongoing.
