A provincial Department of Justice spokesperson says an investigation is ongoing into an assault on a wildlife officer Wednesday when he was investigating suspected salmon poaching activity at Salmon Cove Pond near Victoria.

The officer was treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and later released.

The male suspect reportedly assaulted one officer when approached by three wildlife enforcement officers and then fled on an all-terrain vehicle that had a child as passenger.

The officer sustained minor injuries after being dragged by the ATV.

The government spokesperson said the investigation continues and Fish and Wildlife Enforcement is continuing to work with the RCMP from the Harbour Grace detachment to apprehend the suspect.

Anyone with information on the incident are asked to contact the RCMP in Harbour Grace at 709-596-5014 or by calling Crime Stoppers.

Police are looking for a red, four-wheel ATV with a red storage box on the back.
