People travelling to and from Bell Island received some familiar news today — the MV Beaumont Hamel has been taken out of service for repairs.

According to a news release issued Friday by the Department of Transportation and Works, the ferry’s required repairs relate to oil pressure in the thruster of the vessel.

The MV Flanders will provide single-vessel service until an inspection and repairs are completed. No information was provided on how long those repairs may take.

The remaining vessel will operate on a “load-and-go basis” for the remainder of Friday afternoon. The final crossing from the Portugal Cove dock is scheduled for 9:25 p.m.

For schedule information, ferry users are being directed to call 709-895-6931.

The MV Beaumont Hamel has been out of service multiple times over the last few months. On July 24, repairs were required to deal with electrical issues on the ship. It was also out of service for over a month after it hit the dock in Portugal Cove following a loss of propulsion on May 30.

    Are you serious?

Resettlement? Seriously? That's not feasible. It's the equivalent of saying lets not fix portions of the TCH that leads to smaller communities, just move the people out of there. I bet if some of the politicians lived over there this wouldn't even be an issue. New ferries all around then.

Resettle and move the prison out of Quidi Vidi and on to the island. Eastern Alcatraz.

You get what you pay for. Why should the government do anything at all? They do nothing and guess what??You continue to vote for them.

Do the sensible thing and move to the mainland. Stop whining because I won't let my tax dollars be wasted on building you a causeway. Of course you can always buy a ferry.

It is time for Bell Islanders to step it up a notch with their protests. While it easy for anyone not living there to call for resettlement the fact remains that people do live there and have been living there for generations. It is home. Resettle and the island will become a ghost town and a haven for vandals looking for a boat ride and a few kicks. Then will come the rescue operations when they begin drinking and deciding to take their bath-tubs across the tickle and roam the island for a lark. If the Province wants to generate some real revenue or cost recovery just provide a link or even a larger, more reliable barge type vessel; something people can have some faith in and just sit back and watch the high end development begin. I do not live on Bell Island nor do I have any relatives there but I don't understand why we expect them to tolerate the sub-standard ferry service yet we expect Ottawa to provide the Island of Newfoundland with a Cadillac sevice.

Political Watcher..... I applaud you, this comment is probably the most unbiased, intelligent one, i've seen with respect to Bell Island and the issues the residents have been having with the ferries. Most people have only one response when they see the heading "Bell Island" ...resettlement. To those that live there, it is their home. The Island has so much potential, if the government just realize this everyone would be better off.
