Mackay announces $6 million for CFB Goose Bay

Happy Valley-Goose Bay — Defence Minister Peter Mackay is in Happy Valley-Goose Bay this morning, announcing millions in funding for work at the airbase.

Mackay announced a little over a million dollars for work on improvements to the airfield itself, including work on the ramp in particular.

There will also be about a million dollars spent on re-roofing work on the joint training centre at the base.

The largest announcement was 10 contracts totalling $4 million for continued remediation work on the base — contracts Mackay emphasized will go to local companies and local workers.

Begun in 2009, the remediation work includes fence installation, soil removal, risk assesment and screening and is expected to continue until 2013.

MacKay has to keep 5 wing going as he can't fish out of 9 wing in Gander anymore.

Aw yes, the two Peters. Usually a name with rock-like connotations. But these two Peters are more like the verb - as in, to peter out. In fact, the Webster definition of the verb peter is to 'diminish gradually and then come to an end'. Is there any more apt description of what these two Peters and their master have in mind for Goose Bay?

When the media get an 'advisory' - as they did yesterday - saying the Minister of National Defence would be making an announcement today at Goose Bay, no doubt the naive among them will hurry over to the 'wing' (they don't call it a base) thinking this might be it. This might be THE announcement that finally has Harper honouring his pre-election pledge in 2006 that he would establish a 650 member rapid response army battalion at Goose Bay. But the cocky Peter MacKay has once again pulled the football away at the last second. 'Gotcha' says MacKay 'you really didn't think I was gonna actually put any real money into this dump?' As DND announcements go, $6 million is probably the equivalent of the booby prize. Even the wording of the press release conveys the disdain that MacKay not only has for Goose but also for the local MP and minister, Penashue. Other ministers get to announce stuff on behalf of their colleague Minister MacKay or, at the very least, make joint announcements. In his case, the press release barely mentions that Penashue was there. Well maybe Penashue could be forgiven for wanting to be somewhere else. Yesterday was the re-enactment of the Battle of Signal Hill, the last of the continental battles of the Seven Years War that saw the French give back St. John's to the English. One could only wonder how much better the residents of this place would be doing if the battle had gone the other way.
