Who would you send to Government House?

Topics :
Government House , The Telegram , Newfoundland and Labrador

The first round is over, and the strongest contenders have been identified. Now you get to choose your favourite from a list of 10 possible replacements for Lieutenant-Governor John Crosbie.

In July we asked you to help the PM choose the successor to John Crosbie as lieutenant-governor of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Crosbie’s appointment is expected to end in early 2013 and Harper is likely mulling over his options.

We asked who you thought deserves the honour of being named the next lieutenant-governor of the province?

Online nominations at www.thetelegram.com closed as of July 31. After careful scrutiny and tabulation we unveiled a full slate of nominees.

In the full spirit of modern democracy, we have had our share of technical challenges. In spite of that, we have identified the top 10 vote-collecting answers for the final, hopefully trouble-free, vote.

Follow this link, or click on the “Who would you send to Government House” button to register your vote.

Voting is open until Aug. 29, after which The Telegram will tabulate the results and publish the results in our Sept. 1 edition.

Will Stephen Harper listen?

Probably not, but it’s a fun discussion to have over the summer. To quote Jerry Boyle, “if you can mark an X, you’re our kind of people.”

I think they should get rid of the position because it is useless, take most of the land that government house is on and extend Bannerman park, use the house as a Hotel and give all the profits to charity.

I go with fabian manning. His appointment would raise the intelligence level of the senate, and, ... oh, well, he's the only illiterate public nuisance i can think of whose selection would satirize an institution that is truly laughable. Did you see the 40 pounds of medals on Phil the Greek's chest?

There is so much waste in our government, while people have a hard time making ends meet, so some can have a totally free ride. Give it up save us some money and sell off half the buildings we own and are empty, as well as the gov.house and grounds. Creating a job for someone who can't get one at that rate of pay. while some newfoundlanders are broke and worse off because of the waste, imagine how much less we would have to pay.

General Rick Hillier....should be the next Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador. Of course, Mr. Harper will appoint his choice, and won't listen to what the john q public is saying. Remember the old saying...My mind is made up, don't confuse me with the facts... I rest my case!

I agree totally and completely with Edmund. However, this useless extravacant, high-paying position, with all of its benefits, and huge house and amount of property and upkeep, will continue, so I vote Justice Margaret Cameron without a doubt.

My vote would be for Lynn Verge. From my research a women has never held the position in NL. And Lynn would add such class, elegance and professionalizm to the position, similar to what Michaelle Jean in Ottawa. Just hope she would not travel and spend as much as Jean did if she were to be appointed. Good luck Lynn !

After reading the list .........half of whom I,ve never heard of.........none of them is worthy of suc a high honor. None of them met the standards of political correctness today, ie..white Christians are a no no. Gays, lesbians, trans genders, aboriginals, and other visible minorities may be considered. Make it easy just appoint the first Muslim as lieutenant-Governor of NewFoundLand.

The list is ridiculously long but after going through the list and subsequently reading the comments section... Not sure who this McMeekin person is but this is not a position for a young person successful or not. Sorry girlfriend but being young virtually eliminates you from the position. This is a position for a person with a vast array of work experiences and life experiences. Not usually characteristics congruent with that of a youth.

McMeekin, come on, really guys? what has she done? other than drive people crazy with the use of twitter and her starbucks rants....give me a break. To be even considered for such a position one would have to be at least successful ? no?

If you don't enjoy what I have to say on twitter, there's an unfollow button. Feel free to use it. I had nothing to do with getting my name here but I think it makes several valid points. Firstly, it's nice to see a woman near the top of this poll. I think it's long over due. Secondly, the youngest LG in the county's history was 44 years old. Instead of consistently giving this position to someone in their senior years why not consider someone younger? We, as a province, have been working diligently to be seen as a province of choice for young people. To create an atmosphere that is welcoming and inviting for young people to want to work and raise a family here. I think having a younger person in this post could help give that impression. By the by, I'm sorry you don't feel I'm successful. What was it you saw in my CV that you didn't like? ... oh wait. You probably haven't seen it, huh? Be happy to forward it along if you'd like to further scrutinize. I'm not under any impression that I'd actually be considered for this post, but I do think this poll has the opportunity to prove several points. And I hope it does that. Cheers! Rhonda

What a crock of crap. The position and any association to the useless british monarchy should have been abolished years ago. To satisfy a self serving bunch of a few righetous aristocrats at the expense of tax payers dollars, when we have absolutely no need for their pompous ways and like followers, makes one wonder how gullable some of our citizens are who support this. We do not need the queen or any of her plebs sucking the public tit so they can live the life of high society at the expense of the common man. Shut it down and do everyone a favor. All the names mentioned in the weekend paper are simply out to promote themselves to acquire status and money. If any of them had any backbone at all they would come forward to support the abolishment of the position and everythig associated with govnt. house and give the all the monies to pay for this position etc. to help the poor, homeless or those in need. We don't need to see the likes of Crosbie being escorted around the province on one of the few warships that work and being tendered to places like Grand Bank for a feed of fish and chips. How ignorant of him to do that to the people he put out of work 20 years ago. Just goes to show how wasteful this position is and how out tax dollars are wasted supporting this obsolete position and everything it stands for. God save the queen, yeah, hello & I don't think so.

Why should Harper consider anything from a Liberal newspaper and their Liberal critics. It doesn't matter who he picks, it will not be the right one.

Harper, is not likely to take anybody's counsel but his own, but it is interesting that the telegram would give Newfoundlanders an opportunity that the Prime Minister and his Cohorts are unlikely to extend to us, The Choice of General Rick Hillier is also quite interesting, and in my 0pinion, a rather sound choice. Harper, is unlikely to find a better Candidate.

The Telegram should move away from this kind of conjecture and nonsense. What your readers think will have no bearing on the decision to be made by Ottawa.
