Today and Friday, reporters from media outlets around the province are being given a tour of the site of the proposed Muskrat Falls hydro dam and Upper Churchill operations.

Representatives for Nalcor Energy offered the tour free of charge, following requests for views from the ground and further information on both the Falls and hydro operations at Churchill Falls.

Nalcor staff are taking questions on the work leading up to the decision on sanctioning the project, potential change in cost estimates and transmission options, among other topics.

Debate on the project is scheduled for the House of Assembly later this fall.

The Telegram has joined the tour from Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

The Weekend Telegram will contain more detailed coverage.

You've got to be kidding me. NALCOR has no business wasting money on these types of things. This is unacceptable. How irresponsible of government to allow this.

Always remember that Nalcor received $665 million of taxpayer dollars in this year's Budget 2012. Be assured taxpayer monies were used for this helicopter joyride and lunch for the media to garner favor.

    Cold Future

Muskrat is economically viable at about $ 3 billion. At $ 6 billion it requires significant subsidy by the captive NL consumer in order to sell power we do not need to greedy mainland consumers at discount rates. At $9 billion it is a significant disaster for the NL consumer. The measure for Muskrat should be if it can be built so that the electricity rates in NL can be kept in line with the average electricity rates and electricity escalation rates in Canada it should go ahead. If it cannot, then it should be put on the shelf in favour of more enconomical power projects to be developed when power is required. The government needs to get away from the vague general statements such as; look at the big picture, its for the grandchildren, its for the future and on and on.... What is needed is facts about what the electricty rates will be.

Ah, the first sign that Nalcor is feeling the heat! So they trot out the ol' tried-and-true...a summer boondoggle vaca-freebie (freebie in the sense that we're all paying for it) to get the (too paltry few) naysayer media types to perhaps soften up and shut up. FYI Nalcor: The site is impressive, the scenery stunning. It's the spreadsheets, the numbers, the contracts, the financing that don't fly. A photo op to 'JoeyWorld' doesn't change squadoosh.

More money wasted on this dam project.
