The MV Highlanders ferry, serving between Port Aux Basques and North Sydney, N.S., is out until at least late next week as a result of a generator breakdown discovered Wednesday, Marine Atlantic says.

Marine Atlantic has had to reschedule 8,000 passengers to sailings as close to their original bookings as possible.

But there were some high winds forecast for this afternoon (Friday) on the west coast that Marine Atlantic said would likely thwart the schedule for a short time, spokesman Darrell Mercer said.

The schedule of other Marine Atlantic vessels has been modified to accommodate passengers affected by the Highlanders’ breakdown.

There are three additional sailings in all, using the Atlantic Vision and Leif Ericson for extra duties. The Blue Puttees is also still in service.

As well, Marine Atlantic is offering passengers who had already reserved on the Highlanders, and commercial customers, the option of going the Argentia route at no extra cost.

More passengers were displaced on the Port Aux Basques to North Sydney crossings because demand is higher at this time than those who were departing North Sydney, Mercer said.

Mercer said the crunchtime will be this weekend and traffic volumes will drop off by Monday.

Marine Atlantic is not accepting new bookings at this time and Mercer said the agency apologizes for the inconvenience.

Left Newfoundland on Aug 4th/12 and was scheduled to return on the Vison this past Friday (17th). Due to the breakdown of the Highlanders and the weather in the Port Aux Basques area the vision was so delayed, that we were not scheduled to board it until 0900 Saturday morning. HOWEVER, unlike everyone else that wrote here - we were informed every step of the way what was happening on the North Sydney side. People were talking and meeting one another in the yard while we waited. Then Marine Atlantic made an announcement that they were going to bus us all over to the "sick bay" area to board the Highlanders for the night. They bussed us in very efficently, if you had a cabin booked you were given a cabin to sleep in Friday night. They fed us! The organization and communication was FANTASTIC! Sometimes your car breaks down and you need to change the plans for the day, just because you spent $20,000 on your car doesn't mean it will never be out of commission for maintenance people. I am still a satisfied customer and I think they went above and beyond for their customers this weekend.

If someone with a clue was to prioritize the things necessary to make this island inhabitable for human beings, mitigating the isolation of the place with some well thought out, efficient linkage to the mainland (aka 'the rest of the world') would be one of the most primary, basic items on the agenda. We've been here 500 years. We've been part of Canada for over 60 years. And all we have is a completely unaccountable, unreliable, unaffordable, government lackie managed money pit. And Newfoundlanders are not blameless.....we continue to put up with it.

Marine Atlantic's motto seem to be "Garbage In, Garbage Out" as they just got the two ferries, MV Highlanders and MV Blue Putees, last year and they are running into mechanical problems already. This crown corporation needs to be investigated for managerial incompetence as breakdowns are not supposed to occur in the first year. Almost sounds like the Halifax Harbour Solutions Sewage Treatment Plant breaking down after just one year.

$500 million in new boats. Splashy TV campaign last yrar, touting the new boats and the new, friendlier customer service. New Marine Atlantic CEO, appointed in May. Same old, inexcusably inept, undependable, government zombie operation. Welcome tourists --- world class!! BTW, the only reason anynoe even knows about this screw up is because it IS tourist season...the rest of the year, this stiuff is par for the course.

What do you expect when all they buy is second hand junk that even the cash strapped Europeons don't want. Too bad that Marine Atlantic can't find any shipyards in Atlantic Canada to build somethin decent.

Hum ho. What's this, another Marine Atlantic failure? Gee the papers are full of these lately. What a waste. Privatize for goodness sake and let's get some REAL service and bang for our buck.

WAKE UP Newfoundland! A reliable ferry service is imperative in today's day and age. Mediocracy on such a key service that supports the province is unacceptable. Wake up newfoundland! Preventative maintenance is your friend!
