A major renovation project is underway at Holy Heart Theatre in St. John’s.

The work includes all new flooring and seating, aimed at making the theatre one of the most comfortable audience venues in the province.  The main interior doors to the theatre will also be replaced to provide easier access for wheelchairs.

Theatre manager Leslie Martin said in a news release, with the future of the Theatre now secure, the restoration project has shifted into full gear.  “The project was kick-started in 2005 when Sheilagh Guy Murphy and Terri Andrews put together an all-star cast of former Holy Heart students to stage ‘Steel Magnolias,’” Martin said. “It seems only fitting that their production of ‘White Christmas’ will be the first major theatre production following the installation of the new seating.”

This spring, the provincial government and the Eastern School District committed funds to replace the seating.

Martin said the theatre is grateful for the support and this is a major step forward.

Besides the new seating, plans are also under way to raise funds to expand the technical capabilities of the theatre.

A new public announcement system and contemporary lighting system, capable of handling the larger concerts, musicals and events is desperately needed, Andrews said. “We’ve managed to make significant improvements, but there’s so much more we need to do.”

And, with the new seating comes a unique opportunity for the public to contribute to the ongoing efforts to improve Holy Heart Theatre.

For a donation of $250, members of the public can sponsor a seat, complete with a plaque marking their contribution.  “

We’re appealing to theatre patrons, former students, companies and the general public to help out,” Martin said.

Some regular users of the theatre have already come forward.  Steele Communications, VOCM Cares, the Holy Heart of Mary Alumnae Choir, Shawn Basha, Tada! Events and Our Divas have all pledged to sponsor seats.

Individuals and organizations wishing to sponsor seats may do so by contacting Theatre manager Leslie Martin, at lesliemartin49@gmail.com or by telephone at  709-727-0349

The Holy Heart Theatre was built by the Sisters of the Presentation and Mercy Convents.

It first opened its doors as Holy Heart Auditorium. Its first official event on Sep. 25, 1962, was a gala affair celebrating the graduating class of that year. Over the years, the theatre has not only been a resource for the Holy Heart of Mary Regional High School, but also an important one for the community.
