A 34-year-old woman, with more than $27,000 in outstanding fines, was issued summary offence tickets during a traffic stop in Mount Pearl Wednesday for operating a vehicle without a valid driver's licence and having no insurance.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary pulled the woman over around 9:55 a.m.on Olympic Drive. She was held in custody until her court appearance.

The RNC also arrested a 16-year-old male at police headquarters in St. John's around 4:50 p.m. Wednesday for uttering threats and breach of court orders. He was also held in custody until a court appearance.

Meanwhile, in Corner Brook Wednesday, a 16-year-old male resident of the town was arrested as a result of an ongoing investigation for breaching conditions of three different court orders.

He was released in the custody of his mother to appear in court at a later date.

I guess you have did no time in prison (paying your debt to society) which is a good thing but for one minute do not think there is no booze or drugs in prisons because they are full of it.

Still can't understand how a person can rack up $ 27,000 of outstanding fines related to operating a vehicle. Must be some mess of parking tickets ??? Where are the fines coming from ???

If people do not pay the fines then place them in jail. 6 months of jail should be sufficient for $27 grand in outstanding fines. No freedom, lousy food, no booze or drugs for 6 months - now that is real punishment for those people.
