Victorian-style benches, lamp standards and fencing, a new gateway with lighting and new water fountain are among features of a Garden of Memories that was officially opened today in Bannerman Park, the first of six major projects in the park's revitalization plan.
Jennifer Guy, chairwoman of the Bannerman Park Foundation, said the garden is intended to be a "beautiful place of quiet reflection" and is a fitting beginning to this "exciting and dynamic project for the foundation and the City of St. John's.
The garden is made possible through generous contributions from founding donor Elinor Gill Ratcliffe, who sponsored the new fountain and its surrounding gardens, lamp posts and benches, North Atlantic Petroleum, Nolan Hall and Henry Mews.
The park foundation was formed in 2010 to implement the Bannerman Park Master Plan. Completion of the revitalization will cost about $6 million. The foundation's goal is to raise $3 million, with the city matching funds raised dollar-for-dollar.
People can contribute by sponsoring various fixtures, flower gardens and commemorative granite stones, which will be used for pathways in the garden.
