A pedestrian and a dog were struck Thursday night on Airport Heights Drive in St. John’s and the driver has been arrested for impaired driving and failing the breathalyzer.

The victim, a 61-year-old man who was on a marked crosswalk at the time, was taken to hospital by ambulance with what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The dog’s condition is unknown.

The RNC responded to the scene at about 7:22 p.m.

The 68-year-old male driver was arrested, charged and later released from custody to appear in court at a later date. He was also issued summary offence tickets for passing a vehicle on the right and failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk.

The RNC is asking anyone who has any information in relation to the collision to contact the RNC at 729-8000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). You can also provide information anonymously on the NL.

NL drivers are notorious for ignoring crosswalks and pedestrians who use them do so at their peril. I would use a crosswalk in NL at night only if there was no vehicle to be seen in either direction. The same applies to crosswalks on supermarket parking lots, where drivers act like the crosswalks are invisible and they're playing a game of chicken with pedestrians.

One man lays in a hospital bed and might loose one of his closest friends while a drunk driver goes home free... When will laws change around drunk driving?
