An employee of the City of St. John’s waste management division is reported to have been seriously injured this afternoon after being cut by a piece of glass that was inside a garbage bag.

The city released a statement saying the incident is being internally investigated, as well as by the provincial Occupational Health and Safety and the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

Residents are being reminded to use extreme care when preparing garbage bags for the curb. Any sharp item must be in a puncture-proof container or kept separate in a box that is clearly labelled as “broken glass.”

The city says everyone has a role to play in ensuring our Waste Management employees can safely complete their duties.
