The federal government has announced funding to the tune of more than $300,000 for The Rooms, to support a touring exhibit of artist Mary Pratt’s work.

Ottawa has provided $301,100 to The Rooms Provincial Art Gallery, which is partnering with the Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, to create a retrospective exhibit of Pratt’s work over the past 60 years. It will include about 75 pieces of her art, borrowed from public and private collections in Canada, and will tour across the country starting at The Rooms in May 2013.

Pratt, a native of New Brunswick and longtime Newfoundland and Labrador resident, is known as one of the country’s best photo-realism painters, her inspiration coming from everyday objects.

“I’m pleased that our government is supporting this exhibition, which will enable many Canadians to get to know and appreciate the art of Mary Pratt,” said MP Pierre Poilievre at a media conference at The Rooms in St. John’s this morning, representing Canadian Heritage Minister James Moore.

Dates have yet to be announced, but the exhibit will travel to the following galleries: Art Gallery of Windsor in Windsor, ON McMichael Canadian Art Collection in Kleinberg, ON MacKenzie Art Gallery in Regina, SK Art Gallery of Nova Scotia in Halifax, NS At this time no other locations have been announced, although it is a shame if there is not a more inclusive Canadian tour of the work of this 78 year old national treasure. I suspect funding and scheduling to be the likely culprits for the abbreviated tour.

Will the tour exhibit of Mary Pratt be visiting Montreal? I have looked in vain for the schedule for this cross-Canada event and can`t seem to locate it. Thank you for your kind attention to this request for information. Regards. Madeline Covey
